faiths than those around them? You would think that if you were going to 'preach upon the hill' as it were, that you would want to learn as much as possible about the message you were trying to give to people. Rather it seems that people spout off rhetoric spewed to them from a person who heard it from a guy that heard it from a guy that thinks this one guy mighta said this, that heard she did that one thing. It just boggles the mind don't you think?

I don't understand that either. How can you know who and what you are, if you don't know where you came from? How can you understand a message through a game of "telephone"?
Then again, could be the recon in me. LOL

Fundamentalists don't study enough from the perspective of many different viewpoints to have a view of the "big picture". They go to church and listen to someone Else's take on it and follow along in the Bible as outlined by their studies within the church framework.

This is a grave error, for many are misled this way. It is much more beneficial to allow the Holy Spirit to teach you and when you study many different viewpoints, the Holy Spirit does lead you. However, many are so indoctrinated that they really can't allow the Holy Spirit to teach them. The dogma they have learned inhibits this process and they constantly fear Satan. A being that has no power over mankind anymore. The churches perpetuate this fear.

It is mind boggling and sad.

Fundies apparently aren't bright enough to take in the whole picture. They just memorize what their book says and just take it to heart that it is the way to live. They don't think outside the box, or book, and just rattle off rules from their book as needed.

Community is a HUGE part of fundamentalist culture. That secret knowledge is one of the ways they define themselves and build their bonds.

Everything else derives from there.

i think its because they rely on "the holy spirit" (i.e. their imagination) and not study to inform them, which for them may suffice, but to most everyone else it just makes it seem like they are BSing and just spewing outlandish opinions rather than discussing anything of any substance.

Nothing but quotes taken out of context here, from both sides. Time is the enemy, gotta make your pitch and aim for that 3 minute attention span that is YA.

Indoctrination. They really are discouraged from asking questions, because they're taught to believe that God will take care of everything.

I have often wondered that.

Perhaps the study of the Bible, for example, renders one unable to follow it.
