Well lets compare the role of science and religion in the past as related to our development..
Religion.. Crusades, Inquisition, Terrorism, War, Supression of knowledge and study ie Gallileo, Bigotry, Racism(KKK are Christian) and oh so much more.. what positive influences... Well you have to look to Buddism and other religions for that just look at Mahatma Ghandi.. funny how non-god religion has a more positive impact.
Science.. Vivisection ok thats bad, but what else?? biology, chemistry, geology, archaeology, medical science, astronomy, and so much more.. all have changed our outlook, brought us better understanding and greater progress than any religion..
So I think it's safe to say that science is more important to advancement because it moves us forward, religion would have us stand still and never question in case it proves the belief wrong.. science wants to prove each successive belief wrong until we arrive at the truth.. thats going to move us forward alot faster than Goddidit, I said so, the bible said so, no more questions just believe or you will burn in hell..

Science is of much more importance.
Religion preaches stagnation and an acceptance of the status quo.
Released from the shackles of religion over the last 150 years, the scientific world has made huge advances for the benefit of mankind.
Religion has not provided similar benefits.

Religion (or the lack thereof for the Atheists) should be restricted to individual preferences. For the good of society as a whole...it would have to be science. Pagan (myself), Christian, Muslim, Hindu, Native American, Atheists, Buddists, and so on and so on are all different and can't co-exist in a society where religion ruled. Science however...every one needs it in one form or another whether they want to admit it or not.

Define "advancement".
I think religious *philosophy* is very important but religion is a cultural institution that can be - and very often is - used to control people. That's not advancing in my book because it has the potential to stifle creativity and innovation as well as broader social good.
Therefore between science and religion I choose science because it seeks to further mankind's understanding of the universe. Between science and religion philosophy, I'd call them equal since they approach that journey equally but from two different perspectives.

Science, if advancement means the inclusion of new ideas and technologies. Religion generally impedes the advancement of both human civilization and of the unfortunate individuals who become caught up in it.

What do you think is advancement of society? As humans, we desire to create so I would boldly go and create. However, when those creations ignore the spiritual and emotional side of humans then the society will collapse. For example, what really has technology done for us? The best I can say is in the medical field. But, then we have a raping of the environment, addiction to pornography, addiction to other drugs and man made drugs, and all other kinds of perversions including inventing new ways to kill.
As a culture, the US is degenerating in size and becoming obese and getting dumber. Heck, we can program a computer but many don't know how to grow a garden or how to fix something. They hire out or have overseas workers do it for them. Is this the result of science? Maybe, it is also a result of the lack of the spiritual.

Some religions haven't advanced in two thousand years. So science, for obvious reasons.

The word "science" means, literally, knowledge. The science of biology is the knowledge of biology. The science of astronomy is the knowledge of astronomy. So that one scientist has defined science to be "the product of thinking." All the knowledge--the science--that the world has of astronomy, is the product of the world's thinking on the subject of astronomy.
Now salvation is the knowledge of God: "This is life eternal, that they might know Thee, the living and true God, and Jesus Christ whom Thou hast sent." It is therefore science. But this knowledge is not the product of man's thinking; it is the product of God's thinking. Therefore salvation, being the product of God's thinking, is not only science, but is the highest of all sciences.
What things do the angels desire to look into? The salvation of God when it is preached with the Holy Ghost sent down from Heaven. "Of which salvation the prophets have enquired and searched diligently... unto whom it was revealed, that not unto themselves, but unto us they did minister the things which are now reported to you by them that have preached the gospel unto you with the Holy Ghost sent down from heaven; which things THE ANGELS DESIRE TO LOOK INTO." 1 Peter 1:10-12.
The Greek word for "look into" means, "to stoop to a thing in order to look at it; to look at it with head bowed forwards; to look into with the body bent; to look carefully into, to inspect curiously" of one who would become acquainted with something.
Such is the attitude of the angels toward the subject--science--of salvation.
Now, do the angels understand other sciences--biology, geology, astronomy, all other sciences? You know that they do. Everybody should know that the angels understand thoroughly all other sciences. Everybody should know that it is perfectly safe to say that all the angels understand all other sciences infinitely more thoroughly than any man understands, or ever understood, any one single science. But the angels are more interested in the subject of salvation than in all the other sciences. They who know the most of all others, are most interested in this one. The salvation of God is truly a scientific thing, not falsely so-called, but genuinely, supremely scientific.
So which science, do you think, is for the advancement of society? Which do you think will have a greater role in the future?
p.s. Forget about the Dark Ages when the apostate church controlled everything and made salvation and all other sciences look like they were antagonistic. Everything that is truly scientific will not contradict the Bible. The Bible is a scientific book. There are things revealed in the Bible on the subject of astronomy that we have just come to become aware of or to understand.

neither one. religion has not developed at all in the pass two thousand years. and science has nothing to do with society , morals. The only way to advance society is to respect oneself and others.

Science advances with knowledge and understanding.
Hopefully religion will be forgotten, but it's got enough people retelling the same old stories in new ways, it will likely be around for quite a bit longer....
