We are buying a PS 3 system from a friend (I am game illiterate!), and was wondering if you could play any other PS games on it too. We have 2 small girls & there dont seem to be a lot of PS3 games for them.

Yes, somewhat, depending upon which model you get. The 60 GB PS3 model has the hardware Emotion Engine chip in it that pretty much plays all of the PS1 and PS2 games.

With the 80 GB model, that chip has been removed, and software emulation is done to play PS1 and PS2 games, but the number of compatible PS1 games is decreased.
