Disagree, Female Marines, (WM's) have a lot of reasons to join, and many occupational fields transfer to the civilian sector fine. Electronics, Communications, Administration, Supply, Pay and Finance, and Criminal Justice just to name a few. The Marines pride themselves on being the best, it's not cut out for everyone for a reason, but should a woman want to be among the best, then she too should be giving the opportunity. Once a Marine, always a Marine, and that goes for Woman too... It's a pride thing, and I am sure all the Woman that have served in the Marine Corps feel that way, and was proud that they did join the Marines.

If a female is physically and mentally qualified, why shouldn't she join the Marine Corps should that be what she desires?
Yes, you can transfer what you learn in the Marine Corps into the civilian world. There are plenty of clerks, admin, medical, technical, electrical, communications positions in the civilian world that I'm sure any employer would gladly accept a resume from a former WM knowing she has the discipline, knowledge, and respect and the corps values that she has brought with her from the Marine Corps. Marines aren't only known for going to war and it isn't more of a male thing. What century are you from?? Come join the real world!

You like those generalizations, don't you?
I've met some very tough women. In the martial arts I've trained right next to them; and if you were silly enough to think that sparring with them was going to be a matter of you holding back so as not to hurt them... well, you usually ended up with a mouthfull of floor.
I've also seen some wussy guys who only thought they were tough. Maybe they were big because their genes made them that way, and maybe they talked tough, but when the nit hit the grit, they didn't hold up.
In fact, you have to be careful of judging peole the way you are. I saw something once that opened my eyes to this. In Key West I saw three really big, supposedly ornery biker dudes start hassling a female impersonator on the street.
She took two of them down hard and the third guy ran away.
The world, and the people in it, are full of surprises. Judge all people in simple categories and you could be in for a rude awakening.
Woman wants to be a marine (which I can't understand for philosophical reasons), I say she's already demonstrating toughness by choosing that course. Let her give it a shot.

If they go through the training to become a marine, show themselves to be competent marines, whether they were born with a penis or vagina should not matter.
That's why you're a marine?? "to be known as tough"?
At my high school they put together a female football team that ended up defeating the school's male football team. Neither team were small physically. I'm sure I could find some women tougher than you, sir.

Well im in DEP for the marines. I just wanna tell you these recruiters basically work for you at this point. You make all the decisions right up until the day u ship to boot camp. So take advantage of it. If your not sure about picking a job just call ur army recruiter and tell him you dont know yet. Recruiters are seriously notorious for rushing ppl. they rush everyone, dont let it get to you and take your time deciding. I dont know that much about the army except they usually give people alot of bonuses and stuff just for signing up. They have more funds and can spend more money. But some of those 10k bonuses you hear of can be taken away if you dont pass the schools you signed up for. Marines seems to be more about the honor than the perks and it seems to be definately a harder life than the army, although you would be better prepared for combat.

The only answer that matters...
Because she wants to.
The ONLY job that can be marked as "Women's Work" is bearing children (men don't have the right plumbing). Everything else is gender neutral.
As for the skill-set of a Marine not translating well to non-military professions... Why?
Discipline, leadership, the ability to work effectively as part of a team, the ability to work to tight deadlines under unfavourable conditions, the ability to cope with stressful situations and overcome...
With the exception of the weapons training and the fastest ways to kill another human being up close and personal, which all branches of the service receive to a greater or lesser extent, what precisely does not transfer into the Civilian World?
If you think a Marine is tough...try putting him/her head to head with British SAS or Gurkas, Russian Spetsnaz, Canadian JTF2 or Rangers, (most) Israeli troops, etc...
After making the comparison, you'll start looking at the average US Marine as a little girl.

It's not about why a woman should join the Marines. It why anyone should. A big reason that I can think of is pride of belonging. If a woman wants to serve her country then why not the Marines?

Job Training. Women are a part of our work force. They deserve and need just as much training as men do. The marines instill job training, disipline and ensure you are getting a good canidate for the job.

Not everyone is the same. Men or Women. Some women ARE tough, and if they want to fight for their country, why not? If I were in battle, I would'nt care if the soldier next to me was Gay or a Woman, as long as they shoot straight and kill the enemy.

Women can join cause they CAN.
I met a few that are with the Air Wing units - they get to fix and fly aircraft. I think that's really awesome.
