I also have a wireless card but again I can't find the right software for it, it's inventel and usually comes with a wanadoo package.

Any help will be greatly appreciated, thanks

some times there is a simple setting for the eth card that needs to be enabled I have been there on fedora core and some other odd ball distros but ubunut has always just worked
when in dought try a couple other distros and see if they work better with your hardware

Try this, in a Terminal type:
sudo gedit /etc/modules
(put in password)
Create a new line and type

8139too
8139cp

(reboot)
