She had a normal stool as usual. She hasn't been constipated or shown any signs of discomfort. The blood wasn't runny and only appeared on the stool. I have been keeping an eye on it but it happened about 5 mins ago. Should I be concerned? Possibly serious? She has no health problems and is a typical little 2 year old. Thank you!!!

if you are on the computer asking us and not on the phone asking a doctor, you don't need kids

It is always better to be safe then sorry. I am not sure if you kept the stool but I would make an appointment with the doctor. It is likely that as mentioned it is a broken blood vessel as a result of a hard stool but this in itself may be an indication of the need for changes in diet etc. You didn't mention if she cried when she went. These will be questions that the doctor will ask. Take her to the doctor, it is not an emergency to go to the hospital with or to call 911 but certainly it needs to be monitored and checked into by a professional.
good luck!

I would just call her pediatrician and see what they suggest. If it was just a small amount of blood it could be tearing but if it is a large amount then I would definitely get to the doc. Like someone above me suggested, use some Neosporin, if it's a small tear. My son had this happen a couple times, and his doc said just to put some neosporin on it and keep an eye on it and if it got worse to call him again.

People on here overreact. I'm sure you're a fine mother, so don't listen to the others on here. This is exactly why out ER's across the country are so overcrowded. People rush there over anything, even when their doctor is open.

Before you panic, ask yourself - did she eat anything with red food coloring (popcycles, jello etc) or red vegetable like beets, in the last 24 hours......this can cause a reddish, bloodlike looking stool......if not and you see any further discoloration in her stool (blood can often even show up a dark red or blackish color) I would definitely take her to a doctor. You may want to reserve the affected stool in a baggie to take to him to observe/test. I'm pretty confident nothing is probably wrong if it is minimal, it could even be from a slight intestional scratch from something sharp she ate, like pretzel. Congratulations for being so observant and concerned! If in doubt, don't hesitate is always a good moto for children.......

My granddaughter did the same thing about 2 weeks ago. We ran her to the ER and the doctor did an x-ray and said all was well. Never in his life had he heard of this being anything other than from straining.
The small tear takes a few days to heal so don't worry. You can call your Dr. just to ease your own mind.

This is not normal. Call the doctor. He may need a stool sample (yuk) but only way to tell if there is a problem.

Need to put a call into her doc. This is never normal, but there could be a reasonable explanation. Best not to wait for anything to worsten. Just call the doc and they can recommend what you should do, signs to watch for etc.

If she is straining when she goes she may have ripped a tiny blood vessel which does happen. But consult the pediatrician to ease your mind and they may want a sample to be sure.

my toddler has a little 'skin tag' on her anus. just a little piece of extra skin, usually it is fine, but sometimes if she is straining or costipated and poo is harder it will bleed a little. i have spoken to her doc, and she told me when it happens just clean it extra well. and use a little neosporin or vaseline to help lubricate the area and so it doesnt hurt so much... ususally a day or so, and it is better..

but, if there is more than a few drops, no skin tag, and you may want to go to the doc just in case...

So many people on here to over react. Watch her, if she shows any signs of weakness - vomiting, etc, have her seen, if she does it again, contact her pedictrician to see if they would like to see her. sounds pretty normal to me - as long as it was a one time thing.
