I was in cub scouts about 25 years ago and just took my son to sign up for his first time and it seems to be done a little different when I was a kid.
I remeber starting out as a Webelo and then moving up to a Bobcat, where now Webelo is the highest ranking in Cub Scouts.
Am I remembering it wrong. I just remember feeling a little on the outside because the older boys were cool animals and we were corn.

Bob cat is a badge you get in cub scouts. When I was in 30ish years ago it was cub scouts, webelos and then boy scout. These days I think they start them younger and there is one thing before cub scouts.

The Webelo rank was added to Cubbing in 1941 and was for boys who had completed their Lion badge (later dropped in 1967) and had completed some of the requirements for the Tenderfoot rank in Boy Scouts. The only change in the past 25 years that I remember was the addition of Tiger Cubs for younger boys in 1982.

Hello parkdad73:

Corn . . . that's funny. I always thought of the WEBELOS sybol as a peeled banana. 8)

I think you may be remembering it incorrectly. 25 years ago, you would have earned the Bobcat badge first. If you were 8 years old, you would have joined a Wolf Den and worked on the Wolf rank. If you were nine, you would have joined the Bear den and worked towards your Bear award. If you were 10, you would have joined a WEBELOS Den and worked on activity badges and eventually earn the Arrow of Light.

The program has changed a little, and now your son will start in first grade with the Tiger Den, earn his Bobcat award, then work on the Tiger award. When your son is in second grade, he will work on the Wolf award, thrid graders work on Bear award, and fourth & fifth graders work on the WEBELOS award and then Arrow of Light.

You will enjoy the program more if you attend training, and help your sons den as an Assistant Den Leader, Den Leader, or solely as a parent partner. You can get started on training online by going to your council's website (go to http://www.scouting.org/nav/enter.jsp?s=xx&c=lc , enter your zip code, and you will find your council) and look for "FAST START TRAINING."

Remember to keep it simple and have fun.

Keep on Scoutin'

You are remembering it wrong. I was in scouting about the same time you were and the order went:

Cub scout
Webelo
Boy Scout
Eagle Scout
