I've read that many of the women see the other wives as friends. Often these women are not "in love" with the man they are married to and he is significantly older...so the jealousy factor just isn't' there. I would guess that many of them are hoping he won't sleep with them tonight.
Also, a lot of these girls are raised to believe that this is the way life is, that it is what God has ordained. They do not want to disappoint their families or have to give up all that they've ever known for something they are unsure of.
If you are a young girl (really still a child) and your parents tell you that you will marry and older man...you do so because you are still a child. You then become a mother and begin that life. The older wives are your friends and support system. It is the only life you know and you can't see that there might be a better one waiting. If you leave, you leave your children, your parents and your friends. This is something that would take a lot of courage and belief that life will be better.

SISTER POWER!!
Women don't HAVE to allow a man to have sex with them. If a man, any man, has sexual relations with a woman against her will, even if it's his wife, it's RAPE. If a man has, say six wives, and all six get together and agree that this man needs to be taken down a peg or two, he's got a problem! And who wants six women all "PMS-ing" at the same time?
Well, I suppose he could beat them up, but I doubt that would work cause how is he going to beat them all up at the same time? Six against one!
Here's how I would be in a polygamous relationship:
I would get to know the first wife if I'm not the first, and if I am the first, I would be darn sure I got along moderately well with the others. Actually, probably only two wives is best. We rent or buy a duplex, with me on one side and the other wife on the other side. We help each other, especially with kids. And when I get sick and tired of HIM, I can kick his butt out, with no guilt, knowing he has another place to go, but also knowing that SHE is more sympathetic to me than to HIM. Soon, by the time I'm ready to take him back, she's probably ready for him to go.
Personally, I don't know how a man would or could, or would want to, do it! He'd be a sitting duck!!!

Who said that polygamy is limited to 1 man, multiple females? I can think of at least two societies that have 1 female and multiple husbands.
I doubt that I could handle a complex relationship like polygamy now, being married for 20 years and having 2 daughters. But if we had started out that way, it would have had some benefits and some difficulties. I'd think an extra spouse would help spread the load of household and child rearing i.e with 3 or more adults it's more likely that at least one will be available at any given time.
Edit:
I think that "true love" being limited to one person is a social norm not a hard and fast rule, there are many examples/societies to support this.

I can't speak for other women, but personally one man is enough for me.
I wouldn't mind having a couple of girlfriends, though.
Jealousy is a symptom of low self-esteem. It doesn't matter what type of relationship you are in. Couples get jealous as well. If a person has their own rational reasons for not wanting to be in a polygamous relationship, that's fine. But if jealousy is the only reason they have, than the type of relationship is NOT the problem. Jealousy is the problem.

Most of the advocates of polygamy I know (personally) are women.
I (being a man) would not want a polygamous marriage...having different women every night does not interest me. I am picky...and am happy with the single woman in my life.

Men would not want to practice polygamy because true love cannot be experienced that way. Besides, I think most men find it difficult enough to deal with one wife....let alone muliple wives. I'm sure it sounds like a good idea on the surface, but anyone with reason would be able to figure out that such an arrangement would never work.

I'm married.
As great as multiple women for bedroom activities sounds, multiple wives sounds like a nightmare. It's all I can do to keep 1 happy.

I wouldn't want another wife. Sleeping with more than one woman, so what. Sex is seriously overrated anyway. Imagine having more than one wife, let's say three wives and they all like to nag at you. I couldn't take that. I have one wife. A true princess to me, the last thing I want is another wife that acts like Joan of Arc or Eva Braun.

Yikes, no polygamy for me. One girl with PMS is more than enough; multiple women would create a warzone!
