You got your answer from the lawyer. You must cover his fees before you get your check. Pay him.

If you owe him or her money for legal fees, you have to settle that debt. You can use the refund to settle that debt. If the fees he or she is charging are legitimate, the lawyer deserved to be paid for the services rendered. Why was the refund check sent directly to the lawyer? Was that required? Talk to the attorney and request an explanation of the fees. If something is indeed wrong then contact the bar association in that state and file a complaint. Contact your attorney in writing.
You have to understand the whole situation before you start calling someone names. Pay the lawyer for services rendered and ask for an explanation of the expense statement. Caveat emptor.

Open a formal complaint with the Better Business Bureau (BBB) in the City and State where the scum bag Lawyer works. This will force him to answer or have a complaint on his record for the Public to see when they search on him or his firm.

Write him a letter, certified, return receipt. In the letter, ask him how had your earlier payment of fees did not now include this additional fees. Ask him to itemize, list where in the retainer agreement that this expense came from, and mention that you need this in writing, as you would be contacting the State Bar Association if you were not satisfied. Also, note in the letter that you would contact the Bar Asso. if you did not hear from him in two weeks. That should get his attention.

Sounds like the mean lawyer expects you to pay your fees to him. What a jerk! Welcome to America, my friend. We take legal contracts seriously here, and expect you to live up to your part and pay for the services you contracted for.
In the future, please read all contracts completely before signing them. If you don't understand something in a contract, get it explained to you before you sign.
