what does it mean when your gums hurt after brushing teeth?

It can mean a numerous amount of things. You brush too hard. You should never use a medium or hard bristle toothbrush, only soft. You could have periodontitis (infection in your gums), which is very common for those who do not floss daily. I'd make an appointment with your general dentist. If you let it go too long it may turn into something far worse than if you take care of it now. Good Luck!

Sounds to me like you are brushing your gums also! If they are bleeding also you need to see a dentist. This could be gum disease.
You can try switching to a softer toothbrush, this may help, your gums are not suppose to hurt/swell, even with brushing.

the best way to find out is to go to the dentist. i have experienced it twice. it's not normal that it swell after brushing. it might be a symptom in having a gingivitis.
