i'm asking this question in order to shed some light on the whole "is atheism a religion?" debate. saying atheism is a religion is like saying everyone who believes in a god or a higher power are of the same religion. it would be careless for me though to make this assumption as i know there are many different philosophies amongst the different theists. every atheist realizes this and rarely, if ever, makes that assumption. i would never say warlocks and the catholics believe the exact same thing. so why do so many believers try to do that with atheists? just as there are many different philosophies for believers, the same can be said for atheists. some are humanists, some are pascifists, while others are nihilists. and that's just naming a few. all are atheists, and all have different philosophies on how to live their lives.

jewishgirl, i know what atheism means. i'm trying to enlighten people as to what it means. simply saying you believe in a god, does not mean you subscribe to the same philosophies as everyone else who believes in a god. that's what i'm saying about atheism. saying you don't believe in a god doesn't mean you subscribe to the same beliefs as everyone else who doesn't believe in a god.

ok. you totally crack me up, i LOVE your questions, no sarcasm implied, because you really do make me think---and at the same time, you kind of answer it for yourself.

answer: ok, what is a religion? A cause, principle, or activity pursued with zeal or conscientious devotion...isn't a philosophy a set of principles or truths that are followed? i would even go so far as to say atheism is a philosophy, since the existence of God can not be disproved...so, an atheist BELIEVES there is no God, the same as i BELIEVE there is...and we *could* argue about this until the day we die, but to me, that's a whole bunch of wasted time, when i can learn so much from people of all different religions (even atheism :oP) that actually help to strengthen my faith, or belief, in God.

What is a belief? It can be defined as "confidence in the truth or existence of something not immediately susceptible to rigorous proof."

What is a religion? "The practice of religious beliefs; ritual observance of faith."

Is believing in a god a religion? Yes. At John 4:23, 24, it says: "Nevertheless, the hour is coming, and it is now, when the true worshipers will worship the Father with spirit and truth, for, indeed, the Father is looking for suchlike ones to worship him. God is a Spirit, and those worshiping him must worship with spirit and truth."

Oh but since you (well us) are "against" god then you *must* be worshiping something else. The natural state of man is to worship something, therefore you (us) must be closet Satanists. It is inherently impossible for you (us) not to be worshiping something. Everyone has a religion.
See, that's proof and I believe it. I don't understand why you say it isn't.

(Us: meaning I'm an atheist, not that a believer would be including themselves in this)

i don't think in any variety of prepared faith. each faith has their own God and in accordance to their non secular writings, you in easy terms get to heaven via believing in suggested doctrine. Bullcrap. i think there is in easy terms one God, he isn't Catholic, Jewish, Protestant, Muslim and so on. Being a improving Catholic I surely have consistently discovered it confusing that our God replaced into in the present day to blame for the slaughter of innocents who chosen to not have faith. Plagues, floods, and so on. i think in consumer-friendly experience. Be an excellent guy or woman, do the main dazzling element, help others, be variety, do not cheat, scouse borrow, lie, endure fake witness and so on. i'm not an Atheist possibly an Agnostic.

I think believing in G-d is just believing. You don’t have to believe the Christian doctrine or do really anything they teach to be a believer. That does not make you a Christian. Please look up the definition of atheism in the dictionary.
