Tamara, a note or phone call to the teacher that your child should be wearing his glasses in classes (hey, I rhymed!) will let her know that a reminder to keep them on is in order. Unless she's overwhelmed, she'll nudge him into keeping them on, if he even needs nudging. Most kids who get glasses young adapt to them very well and wear them without thinking about it.

I had 2 kids. One had to wear glasses and was always getting them broke at school or losing them. When he went to Comprehensive school he refused to wear them, but now he is at work and using a computer he wears a pair for eyestrain etc. whilst he is doing close work. As far as the schools in London go, I can't imagine them bothering whether they wear them or not. They never did in the 70/80's and from what I hear they are even more uncommitted to the children now. It may be different in schools elsewhere, I don't know.

almost every "5 year old" who has been Rx'd glasses needs to wear them full time. if they are not bathing or swimming or sleeping they should have them on.

you should call your eye doc and confirm, but i've never heard of a child that young being Rx'd "optional" glasses or "occasional-use" glasses. at age 5 the only reasons to Rx glasses are to correct or prevent some refractive error that could cause amblyopia (lack of visual development).

it is almost certain in my mind that your eye doc meant for your son to wear them all the time.

I have a four year old nephew who wears glasses & has had them since he was 2. Depends on what your doctor says they are for. If they are for distance he should wear them all the time, If for close up he can take them off for playing. Do what the doctor tells you. School should do whatever doctor says TOO!

My daughter started wearing glasses at the age of 8. She has pretty much worn them full time ever since.
