The best wat to ward off or prevent migraines is to determine what your precipitating factors are and eliminate them. Many are dietary, some are lifestyle.
The best wat to determine your precipitating factors or triggers is to produce a migraine diary. You can print a diary sample out at the following site:
http://www.headaches.org/consumer/educationalmodules/migraine_module/headache_diary.pdf
ALso there are many know dietary triggers which you should be aware of. They may be viewed at this site:
http://www.headaches.org/consumer/topicsheets/diet_headache.html
This information may be helpful in decreasing your headaches. Additionally, do not significantly increase or decrease your caffiene level on any given day as it can trigger a headache, and the pain medications if taken too often can cause a rebound headache. (see analgesic rebound site:)
http://www.headaches.org/consumer/topicsheets/analgesicrebound.html
Avoid bright sunlight, roomlight, and prolonged exposure to flourescent lights and computer screens, as all these can trigger headaches.
If you get a headache, relaxation is the key.
Accupuncture is effective for many, though I find that biofeedback is the best treatment, as everyone can take care of the management of their own pain. Also training in self-hypnosis, or working with someone on guided imagery helps.
Finally, just going to a darkened room, with quiet or at most soft music and a cold compress over the eyes can help.
There are also medications which can prevent and abort headaches of all types, but you requested info on management without meds.
Hope this helps.
I manage my own migraines without meds almost all the time.

Hi I have keep getting these, I think its the weather or something going around. It all depends if it is a migraine you have got if you have a really bad head ache and light effects you and you can see out of one eye or getting black patches and you feel sick then its deffiantly a migraine. Migraines are usually caused by hormones, computers, eye strain or food you eat. So maybe cutting out anything you have eaten different in the pass few days, It could just be the time of your month.
I used to get them really bad. I nearly ended up in hospital I had one so bad, the doctor then gave me solubal paracetamol as they get into your system quicker so gets rid of the mirgrain its best to take it as soon as you fell one coming on. I usually feel sick and light headed then gets lie blurry ness in one eye.
If its a really bad headache and you are getting pain around your nose etc then this could be sinus pressure try steaming you head with a facial sauna or hot bowl of water nad towel over you head and add a few drops of olbas oil, which should take the pain off after a few minutes but you have to do it often or the pain will come back.

I have had limited success with various methods, a magnetic headwrap which applies pressure, applying an ice pack to the forehead, having a milkshake and drinking it quickly, or taking advil migraine. Sometimes a candy bar or soda will help it go away.
Try to keep a diary of how/when they occur to find a possible pattern of causes to avoid.

There is no medicine for H/A OR MIGRAINE. Not only these but for almost all painful diseases. Hence they become chronic.
Acidity, WORRY, excessive wind, cold , heat, sour food and sinusitis, constipation, intestinal inflammation; drugs, TV, computer, addiction,
Blockage in the flow of Vital Energy are their causes. None of them can be treated with medicine. Our 100% success in treating migraine &H/A confirms it.
Acupuncture is the best treatment. I can treat it with naturopathy and YOG, but how can you manage pl see.
Avoid late sleeping if possible; worry, spicy foods, sour fruits, stale bakery foods and alcohole.
Sweet foods, COCOANUT WATER,sweet fruits, milk, rice, SPROUTS, SALADS and good sleep will help you.
But you try one herbal remedy- two drops of drumstick leaves' juice in opposite nostril if one side pains and both nostrils if full H/A will give you rescue. Betel leaf helps but it isvery strong.
If it is acute pl search a painful point 3-6 mm behind your thumb nail and press it, H/A will disappear within 30 seconds.

A friend of mine has suffered migraines for years, she has been to see specialist and has been prescribed an injection for pain which is self administered.
A couple of months ago she went to one of those Chinese herbalists and says she cannot believe the difference it has made to her life.
Not as many migranes and less severe.
Hope this helps

There are several medications which do a lot better job than painkillers alone, if it is a true migraine and not "just" a bad headache. I'd have a word with your gp.
