Because the Buddhist monk is revered in Myanmar and a protesting Buddhist monk is a threat to the dictatorial government.

The burmese gov. is ruthless and this just proves it. Unfortunately, thugs worldwide learned after tiananmen sq. that they could get away with things like this and have them forgotten shortly. So sadly, the burmese military probably has nothing to fear. Hopefully I'm wrong and the people will rise up en masse, but after thousands were killed when they tried 15 years or so ago who can blame them for being reluctant.
