Earplugs throughout the whole flight. http://www.snorestore.co.uk/contents/en-uk/d76_flying.html has a whole section on earplugs for flying.
He should also take pain relief an hour before landing. e.g. paracetamol or ibuprofen.

I swear to you this happened to me every time as well! I would not only come close to tears, but I would even be deaf for the first day or so of my trip from the pain.
My doctor suggested Allegra D (I suppose any decongestant medication would work too). He said it was a fluid build up in your ears that caused this. I have flown 4 times since, and it really worked 100%!!!!
Good luck, but try it!!

It is excruciating pain. I have it too.
Try to sit in front of the engines and start sucking the sweet early and keep swallowing. It is something to do with the ears being undeveloped I think (don't quote me) Babies suffer. In my case I have narrow channels in my ears, can't say if that's my reason for pain. Hope the other comments help.

i'm guessing it may be perforated. whilst the stress replaced the ear drum bodily. they provide you nasal decongestants and advise which you chunk gum. whilst a doctor prescribes antibiotics, consistently take the finished prescriptions. do not take it in easy terms until you sense extra useful. The micro organism will nevertheless be there and could grow to be proof against the antibiotic. then you will have a resistant variety of micro organism. that's how the resistant styles of tuberculosis formed.

It could be that the tube that connects the inner ear to the back of the throat is obstructed. This is needed to equalise the pressures.
Go and talk to your doctor, if its a recent problem it may just be a simple infection.

I find that decongestant tablets help me. I take one about half an hour before take off and again before landing. And yawning helps too.
He could try holding his nose and breathing out to try and clear the tubes too.

sounds like his Eustachian tubes are blocked and he may need some sinus surgery.......or at least should see an Ear , Nose & throat specialist.
