Very true...
This is quoted from wikipedia,
"What mainly surprised readers was the first person on Hart's list. Hart decided to choose Muhammad over Jesus or Moses despite the fact that Islam was not the largest religion and that it was from a distant part of the world from where he lived. Hart attributes this to the fact that Muhammad was successful in both the religious and political realms. He also writes that Muhammad's role in the development of Islam is far more influential than Jesus's collaboration in the development of Christianity. He attributes the development of Christianity to St. Paul, who played a pivotal role in the development of Christianity."
and note that although a lot of the rankings were later reordered to form another...The Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) had kept his first position...
Its time people discover that what caused this was his infallibility...a divine gift...

I concur with Michael Hart. Muhammad (s.a.w) was and still is the most influential person throughout history. Not to mention that 1 out of every 5 people in the world today are Muslim, who follow the legal ways of Muhammad (s.a.w).

Fritz Haber, discoverer of the Haber process, which converts gaseous nitrogen to ammonia, which can then be used to create fertilizers as well as explosives.
And before you say, "How does that influence the world?", think of this: without fertilizers, we would produce maybe half of the food that we currently grow. Without explosives, modern warfare would be drastically different. If we never had the productivity of modern farmers, the world would either have far fewer people, or famines would be much more common. And without modern explosives, wars would probably be much smaller affairs.

According to TIME magazine, it was Isaac Newton, for setting down the basis for all of modern physics. Oh... and inventing calculus.
I'd personally put my money on either Galileo (for inventing the scientific method of inquiry) or Aristotle (for formalizing logic). It's a toss-up.

Influential does not necessarily mean "for the better". So if Muhammad, the negative things are no reason to discount his influence.
I'd say the most influential person is Saul of Tarsus, the true inventor of "Christianity". That also was influence for ill.
