hi guys. I have a very big problem. My tooth at the upper part at the back really hurts. i saw a cavity in it. It ate half of my tooth. (waah!) i've been having pain for almost a week now. but today is different. Even when i just close my mouth and it touches my lower teeth, it instantly hurts. (like it's as if it's coming off but it doesn't) I can't even eat. I've taken several mefenamic acids but the pain won't wore off. i even tried warm salt gargle. What can i do to get rid of the pain (temporarily) so that i could go to the dentist and get it extracted? thank you in advance!!

Obviously you have dental caries affecting that tooth and the swollen gums result from infection/inflammation - a condition known as gingivitis.

You're correct in going to see your dentist and in the meantime an old-fashioned remedy that can help toothache is Oil of Cloves - ask your pharmacists for details.

Sure sounds like an infected tooth. At the very least you should be on antibiotics. That will not cure the problem but will temporarily take care of the pain and swelling. You will eventually have to have the tooth or gum's around the tooth treated for a permanent solution.

If you haven't gone to the ER yet, go. There should be a dentist on-call than will be able to help you... Don't wait any longer; it sounds like you have an abscess and you shouldn't wait any longer to have it taken care of.

If the tooth is too 'hot', you will be put on antibiotics and pain meds until it calms down enough to be extracted.

Best of luck.

Clove oil works nicely, although you may find you're constantly putting the stuff on. You're better off taking a pain-killer at night though - that oil is not going to cut it. You also get a clove oil that contains camphor - I find it works faster. And yeah - get to the DENTIST! - (But you know that already, right?)
