Hate to tell you this, but Catholics ARE Christians. One may say "I'm not a Protestant Christian", but to say simply "I'm not a Christian" is to say "I don't follow Christ" as the definition of a Christian is "One who follows Christ".
I know I've mentioned this to people here before and gotten a rashing, but if you go to any priest and say what you've just said, you are likely to discover that your priest will disagree with you.
If I were still a Catholic, (I was a music minister in a Catholic Church for 25 years), I certainly wouldn't deny that I were a follower of Christ, which is what "I'm not a Christian" means. Early Catholics were known by the term "Christian". They then became Catholic Christians. They would have rather died than say they weren't Christian. Please don't deny that today.
I do respect all faiths.

What about when they try and alter laws?
I'd say opposition to gay marriage is offensive and discrimination. I'd say trying to legislate religious morality is as close to breaking the law as one can come without actually doing it.
I used to defend Christians, and still do to some extent. But a lot of the disrespect they get is brought on by their brethren. Then it's all twisted into a "battle against evil" and it continues. When, in reality, if they'd leave nonbelievers well enough alone and keep their beliefs out of laws, they could practice their faith as they see fit.

I do respect Christians who do as you describe.
But some Christians (not all) DO actively offend, hurt, and discriminate - and refuse to offer the same respect I try to offer them. And some Christians attempt to impose their beliefs into a secular government that affects all of us.
That said, you seem to practice selective scolding in that you ignore one side's (yours) disrespect for the other.

Tolerance has to work both ways. I find a lot of arrogance among Christians, thinking they have a monopoly on The Truth, and thinking it is appropriate for them to foist that alleged truth on others, using the political process. As long as there is a significant number of Christians who feel this way, as long as they don't know how to play nice with their "toy", I will do what I can to take it away from them.

Isn't Catholicism a form of Christianity? All Catholics are Christian, but not all Christians are Catholic.

Some (not all of us) atheists are really insecure with their lack of belief and need more people to feel the same way in order to feel secure so they try to convert as many as possible. Much like the evangelists they hate so much...hmm....

Let your brethren know that maybe they should practice what they preach...
some of the most horribles Q&A's i've seen on here have been written by Christians...
Tolerance... please teach that word to most of the members of YOUR religion, because many don't seem to be capable of showing it...

I don't think they should have to just respect. Christians don't just accept and respect our decision not to believe. It is a two way street buddy.
