That's a universal teaching concept, not unique to Mormons. Head down to your local elementary school to see it in action.

ha ha in Catholicism they teach the same way! Why would you join a church who put to death millions of women just because they dealt with herbs and medicine(then called witch craft) why would you join a church who has a history of being a world power and executing non believers and believers alike for the build up of wealth to sustain it's self? why would you join a church that insisted that god said the world was flat? He was wrong once! why would the god of catholics be right now? well I'll tell you the world and its machinations have a huge effect on the policies of any church. Mormons included. churches by their very definitions are the anchors of the world and are always seen as backwards and wrong.... they are not backwards or necessarily wrong. the world and its changing fashions and morals are the ones who are wrong and are in need of some thing stable. churches must need oppose that which the world presents and at times other churches beliefs in order for them to keep their anchor. People who do not know or understand geopolitics, theology, world history, and understand not the divine have no understanding of why these churches do what they do at certain points of history. To answer your question the empire state building was not built in a day they had to start on foundations and build upwards. Likewise anything worth while is built the same. When you understand the idea of faith repentance baptism, revelation the holy ghost and its roles and how it is manifest to you....you may start to understand immortality, eternal life, preexistence etc. With out the idea of faith and baptism, sin, repentance how can you understand intersession of the virgin or why confession is so important to a catholic? The crack of your ignorance is showing! pull up your pants!

It's also in the teachings of the Jews, in Isaiah 28
9 Whom shall he teach knowledge? and whom shall he make to understand doctrine? them that are weaned from the milk, and drawn from the breasts.
10 For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little:
The reason that the "meat" is controversial is pretty much part of why it is meat. Fundamentals must always be learned before things can be expounded. For example, I'm working on my Master's of Accounting and my brother is currently taking the intro to accounting course. He asked me a question about equity and all kinds of issues came to my mind about C or S Corps, accrual vs cash basis, sales allowances, etc. But he didn't need to know all that for his problem. Without the things he's learning know, he wouldn't be able to later understand all the issues involved. It's similar with the gospel.

It means to anwser the question they should have asked, not the question they ask. Example: If a non-member asks you about Jesus and Lucifer being spirit brothers, you tell them about the about the "First Vision".

Lying for the Lord, this is just one of the reasons I left the church.

Since it is in the New Testiment, why not ask all Christians? When there is envying, strife and division, spiritual things can't be taught.
1 Corinthians 3:2 I have fed you with milk, and not with meat: for hitherto ye were not able to bear it, neither yet now are ye able.
3 For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men?

I grew up in UT and thought I heard it all, but never heard this one. Are you referring to "line upon Line" concept. This was in a play that went around the mormon church in UT during the 80's, a man and a women met in heaven before they came to earth (pre-existance) and on his mission trip...I think, he met her or was it before his mission trip, anyways...I can't remember the name of the play, the song went :line upon line, precept, upon precept, this is how he teaches (he being the father in heaven) us his wisdom.

I can explain! It means don't tell non-mormons or new members the strange doctrines and twisted history until they are already completely sucked into mormonism and have lost the ability to think for themselves.

It simply means to take things step-by-step. Some concepts are more difficult to understand without a foundation upon which they can be built.

A lot of things in the church you can't understand until you understand something first. For example, you can't understand the atonement, until you understand who Christ is. This church is a lifetime of study and understanding. You build yourself gradually with patience and passion.
