Yes. Your body needs calories (energy) to perform basic life functions. However, like the article says, it's not enough to lose weight because you couldn't consume more than 550 calories, which is not healthy.

Yes. You can burn calories just by breathing, and all do that. Unfortunately, you can't loose weight without doing anything, because you will have to eat at some point, and then your calorie intake will be higher than the calories burned.

Check out calorielab.com. This website will give you how many calories you can burn doing almost any activity PLUS it will tell you the calorie count of almost any food. It even has info on foods you can get at restaurants, for example many menu items at Taco Bell.
Check it out. You'll be surprised.

your body is always burning calories. sleeping requires energy, breathing and talking and typing all require energy. but those things are normal everyday things and don't count as exercise. in order to keep yourself fit and in shape it is necessary to exercise, even if it's just walking for a few minutes a day. the more energy you exert the more calories get burned.

Its not that you aren't doing anything. This is basal or resting. Your body is still breathing, etc to sustain life, so it does burn some calories.
