I recently purchased the contents of a storage room at auction and among the contents were several boxes of ammo of various calibers. While I am a hunter and familiar with ammunition, I've never been in the position of needing to dispose of live rounds. I don't want to simply throw them in the dumpster as I could see several bad results coming from that. Any suggestion/ideas? Thanks.

As a Gunsmith and Gun Shop Owner I have customers bringing in old ammunition all of the time..The ammunition that not use-able I simply invested $20 and bought a Kinetic Bullet Puller from Brownell's...Its like a hollow hammer and the cartridge clamps in one end, you tap it on a hard surface and the bullet pulls out from kinetic energy. The Puller also catches all of the powder, the bullet and the empty primed cartridge with ease. Works great and you can throw away the components without fear of explosion or discharge. The Dumpster Guy who picks up my trash loves the idea that he doesn't have to worry my Dumpster is going to "blow up" when he comes to dump it. I take a can of WD40 spray and give each primered casing a short squirt inside and that neutralizes the primer easily. I actually have 3-4 of these at the shop that I "lend out" to customers who want to get rid of their own odd ball ammunition. Works with every regular caliber rifle and Pistol ammunition but Rim fire..No muss, No fuss, NO BOOM! lol. All Reloaders should have one of these anyway....Great PR for my shop too....If you don't have the cash to buy a bullet puller, take it out in the woods while you are hunting and just bury it underground..It will break down before you know it.

Do you have a gun club or ranges near you? If so they may take it. I am not a big fan of shooting stuff that I found so I use a bullet puller, remove the bullet, dump the powder in the grass and reload the casing. You did not say if it was good looking or not (clean, dry, no rust, factory packages) if it's not contact local law and ask if there is a disposal site near you. Most ranges have ways of disposing of it also.

my best suggestion is to either turn them over to a gun shop to dispose of, or call ahead, then take them to your local police department. both can safely dispose of them for you. If you were a reloader and had the right equipment, you could use a kinetic bullet puller to safely pull the slug from each round, pour the powder into a safe container but that would still leave you with live primers in the empty cases.
Good question!!

The proper way to dispose of ammo is to send the bullet flying down the barrel and the brass flying over your right shoulder!

Kidding, I'm sure if you drop them off at any gun store they will take them off your hands.

Give it to the local police or Sheriff. They may be able to use it or destroy it.

You did not mention the calibers or what condition it was in. If it is not degraded I may be interested in it depending on the caliber of the ammo & condition.*E- Mail me with caliber of ammo.* dca2003311@yahoo.com

Go to your local shooting range and donate them for practicing or whatever. Just like free beer, they won't last long.

Shoot it, give it to some one who can, or take it into your local PD. We get ammo turned into us all the time.

Call your local police department. It, or another govt. agency it may refer you to, will dispose of your ammo.
