Some interesting answers here. :-) First, you would have to ask which Baptists. Without checking my figures I am sure there are over 30 different Baptist conventions.

If the TULIP brother is correct, the United Methodist Church does not support Calvin's election theory. In fact, my study would indicate that Calvin didn't support the way it is used today. I guestion this however, as Calvin is associated most with other denominations, notably the Presbyterians I believe.

While the United Methodist Church believes in Original Sin, I would reject the entire TULIP definition offered by the brother above.

Even within the United Methodist Church there is not uniformity. We range from extremely liberal pastors and churches to very Orthodox pastors and churches.

The United Methodist Church was founded by John Wesley who was a preacher of the Church of England. His brother, Charles was a great hymn writer. Most people have sung his hymns which include Hark! The Herald Angels Sing.

The word Methodist did not come from the method of worship. It was a derogatory term applied to the brothers because of the methodical way of life they lived. This included their holiness group.

They were very concerned for the poor.

Distinquishing theology includes Perfect Love and Prevenient Grace. Wesley believed that we needed to achieve perfection in this life. He, of course, used the words of Jesus, "You must be perfect as you Father in heaven is perfect." He has a book describing what Perfect Love is and is not.

Prevenient Grace is Wesley's doctrine that God has placed the conscience in each individual so that even those who don't know God have the capacity to listen and respond to God. He also maintained that God seeks us out, long before we seek God. This is a truth I have certainly seen in my life.

John Wesley did not want to found a church. His intent was to awaken the Church of England with spiritual renewal. He in fact led one of the greatest spiritual revivals of Christianity. However, when England lost the War of Independence, Wesley acknowledged that the American Church must now form independently from the Church of England. He thus laid the foundation for an episcopacy in America. This is why Wesley is not listed as a Bishop of the church.

Finally, the United Methodists have Bishops and an appointive system. The Baptists do not have Bishops and the local church makes its own decisions about pastors.

As for Baptism, the difference is not "dunk and sprinkle". Baptists will only baptize "adults who can make an independent decision" [though they will baptize children of ten]. United Methodists generally do infant baptism. And we baptize by sprinkling, pouring or immersion. Since I have never sprinkled a baby, I found the "dunk and sprinkle" comments humerous. :-)

You now have a Baptist and a Methodist perspective. :-) I hope that it helps. For the record, I have been a United Methodist Pastor for 35+ years.

From what I know, the Methodists are a bit more open to independent thought.

There are slight variations in theology, but the most significant difference I see is "sprinkling" versus "dunking".

ETA: All Baptists are not Calvinists!!! I am Baptist but definitely NOT a Calvinist. I specifically have a big problem with the "U" in the Calvinist TULIP.

I can only speak from the Baptist point of view:

We believe in the Scriptures as 100% genuine and God-breathed.

We believe in eternal security for the true believer in Christ

We hold to Calvinism (or the acronym TULIP):

Basic Calvinism

T. Total Depravity: People are completely sinful and depraved and can do no good on their own

U. Unconditional election: Since people cannot choose for themselves, before the beginning of time, without any goodness on their part, God has chosen for Himself a select number of people to be counted as righteous.

L. Limited Atonement: The effects of God's atonement on sinful humanity is limited only to those he has chosen

I. Irresistible Grace: The grace God extends to the chosen cannot be refused since it has been decreed by God.

P. Perserverence of the Saints: (Once saved always saved): Since God has decreed the salvation of the elect, it cannot be changed.

It sounds like a bunch of bullshit to me. God never meant for us to segregate ourselves with man-made religions! We are supposed to love Him, and love each other. I am a former Catholic. That's the worst crap ever. oh this is bad, people are gonna be pissed at me. I don't care. We are here to enjoy the life He gave us, to do our best to help others and love! How can anyone believe one religion is the right one?? Huh? Is that suppossed to mean ALL THE REST are wrong and will not make it into Heaven? Do you see how ridiculous that is? We should all just take comfort in the fact that God is there, loves us and we can pray to him when we are happy, or troubled or just when we want to feel closer to Him. If you choose to acknowledge Jesus as His Son, fine. If you choose to pray to certain Saints, fine. But He will not punish anyone for doing so, as I know certain religions think it is wrong to pray to saints. I know this is not what you asked, but when I read a certain answer, it pissed me right off. Our God is kind, and is not going to punish anyone for stupid s hit like eating meat on a friday during Lent, or any other such 'rules'. The commandments, yes are meant to be followed, but look closely! They are things that are common human decency. My grandmother had the NERVE to tell me that because my daughter wasn't baptized, if something happened to her she'd go to Hell!! Excuse me, our God would not damn an innocent child to hell because her parents didn't baptize her! what a load of rubbish!! and Confession, HA! You are sorry for something you've done, you tell God in your prayers that you are truly sorry and ask forgiveness, it is done. You don't need to say 50 Hail Mary's and 30 Our Father's as penance! God is perfectly happy to know you are truly sorry because that is what matters.
