Not all birds will eat from a hanging feeder. Some species, such as doves, are ground feeders and will eat only if you place the seed on the ground, or on a low table feeder.

Some birds have specific food preferences. Goldfinches prefer niger (thistle) seed, while blue jays, cardinals, nuthatches, woodpeckers and house finches prefer black sunflower seeds and nuts.

Birds will not use a feeder if they see a predator around it. Check your yard for the presence of neighborhood cats, snakes and other predators.

Birds feel safest using a feeder that is near natural cover, like bushes or trees, in case a predator suddenly appears, but you said you have the feeders hanging in trees, so that should be okay.

Take a look around your neighbor's yards. If they have bird houses in their yards, the bird feeders may be too close to a birdhouse. It could be a territorial problem. If so, just move the bird feeder farther from your neighbor's birdhouses.

Birds will also be more attracted to the feeders if you have also supplied a source of clear, fresh water nearby for them to drink and bathe.

Are the birds of a seed eating specie? If you've got Woodpeckers and Nut Hatches they won't come to a seed type feeder.(They'd appreciate a suet cake though.) One way to attract more birds is with a small fountain (any thing that makes the sound of running water).
If You have Cardinals, they especially like Black Oil Sunflower seeds.
Finches prefer Thistle seed.

what type of birds are they? and are you feeding for that type of bird? there are many types of seed that feed different types of birds. you might want to try getting a feeder that is staked into the ground, it just might be easier for them to see.

Try spreading a little feed on and near the feeders!

Seperate your feeders and attach a red ribbon. Birds are teritorial and one maybe chasing other away. Also birds like the color red.(try it!)

good luck and enjoy
