they already have the arc... it's in a top secret government warehouse somewhere.

Then there will be proof of god, and most of the atheists will become theists.
A lot of other religions will look equally foolish.
BTW discovering the ark of the covenant will not prove god. It just proves that the ark exists. I do not think that many archaeologists would dispute this. The question would be where did the contents come from?
Edit:
Science did not come from religion in any way or form. Religion says "God Did It" and walks away. Science says "I do not know. How can I find out?" and studies a question.
Over and over in history science has been oppressed and opposed by religion.

Science will never uncover proof of God. Im not saying that there is no God. Just the science will never uncover it because thats not how science works. Consider anything that is "outside" of the scientific areas. At one time there were many things in that subject which was declared false. Later it was declared science. Just for an example, magic. At one time it included lotions, potions, and chants. The herbal knowledge which led to lotions and potions have been converted to processed and refined products on the shelves, the chants are now referred to as self-actualization or maybe self-hypnosis. But that was not considered proof that it worked, just that it was science all along and no one knew it. :)
If Science proves God, they will just assign a new name to the phenomenon and declare it to be science.
By the way, interesting thing in Quantum Mechanics now about the Big Bang being replaced by a sudden influx of energy from a neighboring membrane. I have that picture of God reaching out his index finger to touch Adams. Repaint that with him poking his finger thru a brane and watch the QM people wiggle. :)

If the Arc of the Covenant was found, it would not be proof of God, it would be proof that such an item existed, which it probably did. God is unprovable. If he was found, then he would simply be worked into the equations of science (so to speak).

'Scienctists' have been trying to do this for the past two centuries. With no success.
And wouldn't 'God' be able to see/predict what they are doing and prevent such 'proof' from being found?
An excellent answer to this dilema is found , of all places, in Douglas Adams classic 'hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy' -
God - "I refuse to prove that I exist, for proof denies faith, and without faith I am nothing"
Man - " But what about the Babel fish? Nothing so mindbogglingly useful could have evolved by chance. It proves your existance, and therefore, you don't. Q.E.D."
God - "Oh dear. I hadn't thought of that!" and promptly vanishes in a puff of logic.

Uncovering the Ark of the Covenant would be proof of the Ark of the Covenant, not of God.

Which gods?
If you mean the Abrahamic one, then I think that science will work then on discovering the attributes of this god, and try to understand how it works. Which may get them a one-way trip to hell for exercising their curious nature.
The scientific method will still be the tool they use, after all.

You make a false assumption in that science is based on religion. It existed before religion, even if the biblical genesis is to be believed, science comes before religion.
But, to answer your question.
I would not follow such a jealous (his words), wrathful being that punishes babies, amputees, and slaves.
Amputees: (if he created us) why would he put the ability to regenerate limbs in the genetic code but then have that function "turned off" so to speak. Just to taunt amputees? That is sick.

I think when it comes to religion/God, people will come up with all kinds of ways to explain away what they don't want to see (and I'm talking about both in terms of believers and nonbelievers, here). Even if something like that happened, there would still be a way to explain it--people are clever that way.

Painting...Painter
Building...Builder
Creation...Creator
I think there already is proof of God. But even if someone rises from the dead, they will not believe! (Luke 16:31)
All of creation declares God, so that man is without excuse (Rom 1:20)

Then I guess science would have to own up to god...
And people who already believe in god and try to discredit science will have to accept science...
And realize that both are true.
Of course, that's hypothetical...as science is the only proven one as of now. :)
