My cat had a minor surgery on Thursday. She came home on Saturday & used her litter box to pee twice, but only maybe 2-3 tablesoons at a time. On Sunday I changed her litter & she got in and put maybe 1-2 teaspoons of pee. Since then she has not peed. She has not pooed since she got home. She is on antibiotics & pain meds. On Tuesday I brought her back in to the vet because I was concerned he has not been peeing or pooing. They suggested giving her hairball treatment 3 times a day to help her poo. She is drinking lots of water & eating so they do not seem concerned at this time about her not peeing & that it is probably just a side effect from the anesthesia. Today it has been 6 days since the surgery, how long can this animal go without peeing? I know for a fact she is not going anywhere else in the house. She has been acting normal, but her stomach is a little hard and bloated. She sniffs at her litter box but that is all she does. Any ideas?

Got to agree with the other answers. the anethesia as now and truly left her system. take about 24-48 hours tog et out of an animals system, (all depends how long they been under.) It would have made everything lazy, but she should have well and truly passed urine and opened her bowels by now, can you try her on some cod liver oil, not to much, this will help lubricate the bowel. but i be more inclined straight away to get a 2nd opinion from a decent vet. i wish her well.

I assume you "fasted" her before her surgery? She would have had an empty stomach on that day then. Generally, so long as the cat doesn't show any signs of distress, or scratching around in the litter box as though she wants to go but can't, then she should be ok. I know it's a long time, but if she had an obstruction or problem with eliminating, she would be in pain, and would be restless & anxious. I don't think you need to panic just yet - but keep an eye on her behaviour for any of the above mentioned symptoms of distress. My own cat needed to stay in hospital a few weeks ago after an illness, and after he came home he only weed twice in four days, and it took a week for him to poo. I was a little worried as well, but when he finally went, it was normal & he didn't show any signs of discomfort.
I bet your cat will go today since you've asked the question - that's how it normally works, or in the next day or so. Just keep an eye on her in the meantime and be ready for the vet if she starts acting distressed.

6 days without using the litter box I would be concerned myself to. Your vet seems to think that everything is normal but it doesn't sound normal. I think its time to take her back to the vet. I know that I couldn't go 6 days without using the bathroom.

the pain medications can cause contipation if she is drinking a lot she should be peeing more from not peeing can cause poisoning of her own kidneys or might have a blockage in tubes called crystals if not better in a day or 2 take her back or see another vet

Your vet sounds ignorant. Take her to another vet. 24 hours without peeing is too much! Your cat is probably in danger. A vet must give her a sonogram to see if her bladder is full, and do something about it.
