My 3 y.o is having his back lower molar extracted tomorrow which he had a metal cap put on 2 months ago but the tooth became infected and now they want to pull it. I am very distraught over this. I was up all night worrying about it. My son is not comfortable with the dentist and we actually are switching to a new dentist but new dentist won't pull the tooth since the other dentist capped it. When we had the metal cap put on the dentist strapped my son to a chair and ever since then my son is deathly afraid. (can you blame him) I'm worried about what will happen tomorrow. What is the worst case scenario? Has any child ever died from an extraction? What if he won't keep the gauze in his mouth, will he bleed to death or something? Am I overreacting? He is only 3 years old.

He had a metal cap put on becuz the dentist said he had a cavity. The tooth that they put the metal cap on somehow became infected. He is on antibiotics but the dentist says he needs the tooth pulled. He sees the new dentist on the 10th but the new dentist said if he were to pull the tooth I would have a long wait for an appointment and he really should have the tooth out asap. So the new dentist said I should just have it pulled by the old dentist.

BTY the dentist that is pulling (same one that capped tooth) is not a pediatric dentist, but the new dentist is. I should have sent him to a pediatric dentist in the first place. Hopefully after all this is over with the dentist we won't have any problems with the new one. The old dentist just didn't have very good bed side manner and that was one of the major reason I switched. He wasn't very compassionate towards my son.

I am a Dr. Albert fan, he is right on the money.
At 3 yrs old your son may have a difficult time understanding what is going on around him, and too many times all of us associate the the unknown with fear and pain.
Oral Surgeons will strap down a child's arm or an adults arm if they feel they can cause harm to themselves during a procedure. It is in no way meant as a torture treatment. I am not excusing your previous dentist, but I am also not hearing from you that there were any other circumstances of concern. Most dentists have the best of intentions at heart. Mom, you have to remember these people are here to help you, you have to trust a little bit. That tooth needs to go and sometimes it is just not easy.
We talk to our kids, soothe them, we make balloon animals and color, but in the end mom and child have to trust us enough to know we are doing the very best for their child and sometimes they may feel a little pain, but if they trust us, they know we are trying to make things better and sometimes the only way to do that is to take out some bad teeth and do things that may not be really comfortable.
You need to check your fear at the door and concentrate on your son getting the best treatment he can. The risks of loss of life or bleeding to death are slim to nil and you are letting your fears not only overtake you, but your son is watching you and he picks up on that fear. If mom is scared, there must be good reason, right?
Normally such little ones are monitored even closer than an adult just because they are so small and don't understand.
Your best recommendation would be to not only finish this treatment, but also follow up with some good easy visits, like cleanings every 6 mos, so that this child doesn't always associate negative tooth pain with the bad man behind the mask, we have kids too.

Don't worry! It's really not a big deal. My son (6 at the time) had a molar extracted and he was fine thru the whole thing, I was more afraid than him and that helped no one. The dentist will apply a topical antesthetic to numb the area before the Lidocaine "shot" after the topical he won't even fell the shot or anything else. It will be fine. Good Luck!! And it's important not to let your son see your fear.

HELLO,
I WAS SADDENED TO READ ABOUT YOUR SON'S ORDEAL, AND I'M SORRY.
WAS THIS A PEDIATRIC DENTIST? NORMALLY, PED DENTISTS HAVE A BETTER CHAIR SIDE MANNER AND A PAPOOSE BOARD THAT YOUR SON WAS STRAPPED IN IS SELDOM USED, BUT IS NECESSARY TO AVOID INJURY.
IT'S VERY CLEAR THAT YOUR SON HAD TO HAVE A TOOTH PULPOTOMY AND A STAINLESS STEEL CROWN.
THIS IS NORMALLY AN UNEVENTFUL PROCEDURE, BUT FOR YOUR SON BEING S YOUNG, A PAPOOSE BOARD WAS DEEMED NECESSARY TO GIVE TREATMENT.
NORMALLY, THIS PROCEDURE HAS A SUCCESSFUL OUTCOME AND THE EXTRACTION IS NOT REQUIRED.
I STILL DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHY AFTER ALL THIS THE TOOTH BECAME INFECTED?
A PEDIATRIC DENTIST SHOULD PROPERLY RETREAT THIS TOOTH. GOOD LUCK.

Why does he have an infected tooth at 3??? That seems unbelievable. Why has he not been put on an antibiotic to take care of the infection.

Brushing with HYDROGEN PEROXIDE will heal an oral infection. I have done it many times and I have 14 crowns in my mouth. I brush with it daily to keep my mouth healthy.

Neither of my children every had cavities although my son did have 6 baby teeth pulled at 10 to allow adult teeth to come in.

If I were you I would try antibiotics and HYDROGEN PEROXIDE (just brush his teeth with it) twice a day. It relieves pain very fast as in minutes for me.

Do not think about worst case scenario if you go ahead with this. It will drive you crazy. Good Luck in whatever you do.

why is he having a molar extracted at 3? you had a bad dentist who conned you in to bad service, that's for sure! you need to get him to another dentist and NOT have this butcher do him at all! I had a dentist use Notris Oxide (spelling) on my 6 yr old son without my permission and he later developed asthma...go to a local hospital that has dental care

Metabolism booster! 3. i'm going to take the physique spray. i will cope with that over sheer funk. 4. Hair. My hair grows back, my shallowness wont. 5. Sewage on suitable of me.
