The term "American" should refer to someone from anywhere in North or South America but has, effectively, been appropriated to mean a citizen of the USA. An older term for Canada was "British North America" but even then it was not the custom to call a person a "British North American".

No your North American not American. United States of America does not include Canada. eg Continent: North America/ North American Country/ Nationality: Canada/ Canadian Continent: North America/ North American Country/ Nationality: United States of America/ American Continent: North America/ North American Country/ Nationality: Mexico/ Mexicans North America & South America together make the Americas aka 'New World' though its not one continent leaving the 'American' label for USA citizens only in the whole Americas.

But people from the U.S. are traditionally called Americans. The first European settlers lived in the part of the continent that is now the U.S., and they were referred to as Americans. So the name stuck.

And besides, it's not like there are any other good names for us. United Statesians? Usans?

As we, Canadians, live in North America and for as long or even longer as people south of our border, we are definitely Americans. But, please, we like better to be called Canadians 'cos we don't want to be associated with THE Americans.
