Maybe it's because most of the Christians who post here are fundamentalists, who take a literalist approach to the Bible. People who take things overly-literally probably are not as intelligent and/or educated as people who look for deeper meanings, multiple layers of meaning, or read critically or skeptically. It would be interesting to know if any psychological studies have been done in this area.

Hypothesis: atheists and non-fundamentalists are smarter than fundamentalists. An idea for someone's psychology thesis perhaps?

Considering the Fundamentalists (Congregationalists and Puritans) started the worlds first free public school system for the masses in 1660.

Religion then went on to found virutally ALL the Ivy League Colleges.

Virtually EVERY private college in America is run, at least in part, by a religious faction.

I'm talking USC (Methodist), Duke (Methodist), Northwestern, Notre Dame (Catholic), Yale, Harvard, Purdue.

I think most Christian intellectuals would not come to a site like this--they know what they believe, and they have good reasons for it, and are probably pretty realistic about the fact that a forum like this is not going to change people's minds. I'm sure a few of them come here to "fight the good fight", but I would think most of them would find it too frustrating and leave.

So, you get a lot who are either really young, really naive, or enjoy beating their heads against brick walls. I don't think it's representative of Christianity as a whole.

That is true to a gret extent in my experience. Fundamentalists lack the eduction and thinking ability of atheists in most cases. If someone had more education and ability to think coherently, he could not be a fundamentalist. My oldest sister is a fundamentalist, while I am an atheist. I am a genius. my principal in higgh school told that I had the highest IQ in the history of the school. My sister is an imbecile. Some teachers commented about her stupidity and wondered how I can be so smart while she is so dumb. She says my professors and I do not know everything. We know that. It is such imbeciles as she is who claim to know much more than they really do.

I don't think that anyone's doctrinal beliefs affect how smart/dumb they are.The fundamentalists on this site are NOT a good representation of the fundamentalist community as a whole.

I can't count how many times I've seen someone say atheist when the correct word for that situation is atheists.
