Yes starters can just stop, however the starter works in combination with a solinoid which can cause this too.

Starters are available rebuilt or new. Rebuilt is often nearly as good as new because the starter is not that complex a part.

One more thing that may have happened is a blown resistor. I do not know if your nissan has such thing. On older Crysler and Dodge cars they had this white ceramic thing on the firewall that was part of the iginition system that caused what you are describing.

Hope this helps. Adventureboy

If you turn the key and you hear lots of clicks, it is most likely a dying battery. If not, the starter is a good guess, but only a mechanic's diagnostic can tell you for sure.

A starter will just stop working without warning but it could also be your key switch, solenoid, c lutch or transmisssion nuetral switch or a bad cable, wire or connection giving you trouble. Someone with a volt, ohm meter can check it out for you.

From all signs I see it appears your alternator has gone bad. The engine drained all the energy from the battery and the battery is not strong enough to turn over because your alternator has gone bad. Like all imports these parts and the labor will probably cost you close to $300.
