the file with a docx extension needs to be opened with WIndows Word 2007 (i.e. the Word version from Office 2007 by Microsoft).

docx is the format introduced in Office 2007. Microsoft has a free download that will let you open those files in Office 2000, XP, and 2003.

word 2007. look for opening 2007 documents on microsoft.com. there is a free addon for previous word versions.
