It's LAUGH-OUT-LOUD. I think you've noticed the fact that it's mainly written in small letters rather than capital. Infact, written like lol it resembles more an emoticon (like :-) :-p :-*) ). Another reason why it's preferred in small letters is that linguists say that capital letters show that that word is 'loud': infact, advertisements use capital letters, it gives the sense that that writing is shouting to that person, talking loud and clear. Last, try and read lol like in 'lollypop' and stress on the 'o' with the mouth round-open (like an 'o'): now go to the mirror and look at your face: it looks like you're laughing, doesn't it? Like Santa Claus laughin! That's why it's laugh-out-LOUD! Some say it's lots of laughters (like someone answered here) but it's not: lol stresses out more on the fact that you're laughing so much that you can't control your volume, and not on how much or how long you're laughing for. So laugh out loud is more appropriate as a meaning. Damn, I should be a lol-logist! lol

LOL is short for "laughter our loud". Because it is difficult to type vocal inflexions and facial expressions into posting, people will use LOL to indicate that they are making a joke or being sarcastic. That way their comments are not taken seriously or are less likely to offend someone.

A lot of people have different meanings. I have heard laugh out loud and also lots of luck. Probably others no one knows for sure? In Angelina Jolie's case it should stand for lose one lip, or lose one's lips.
