I do think that the average atheist man is less sexist than the average religious man. However, I am sure there are exceptions on both sides. We men who are non-believers do not have any pre-conceived idea of what a woman should be (other than that they be a good person), whereas religion has a clear-cut role for what women are supposed to do and it is very clear that they are to be subordinate to men.

I'd say it's very likely that the vast majority of atheists are egalitarian about the genders. It would never occur to me to believe that men should "rule over" women, or that men are "inherently superior to women" (though I do believe that some individuals are superior to other individuals).
We're non-sexist, but we make up for it by being completely sexy.

I think you will find that most Atheists are egalitarian on their view of males and females.
There are some that are chauvinist but you will find a much higher percentage of atheists that aren't vs, religious people.
Read 2 Timothy 2:11-15 to see why that is.

While you're right that there's no religious reason to be sexist, I'd say that it doesn't stop people. At the end of the day it comes down to the individual. Sexism isn't taught but it's not as frowned upon as it should be.

I don't know if it's 100% accurate to generalize so, but speaking for myself, I am quite egalitarian in everything I do, not just my relationship with women.

growing up in my atheist home, women were inferior to men. it never made sense to me and still doesn't. but when we have a family dinner at my mom's house, the women cook the dinner and are expected to clean up after dinner while the men do whatever they please. my husband will get up and help, as will my 15 yr old son and my daughters, but my brother won't.
so religion or lack thereof doesn't always play a part in gender roles
very interesting question, a star for you!

I've found that there is less sexism in the atheist community than in say - the Baptist community. BUT - there are people who believe in God who don't believe that It "ordained that men rule over women." I would be one of those people.

Egalitarianism is the way it SHOULD be! Gender is gender, there is no innate authority. Just because you have a Y chromosome does not make you better. It makes you opposite from the other gender. It's how nature intended it, not some fabricated thing like god.

All creatures born of nature are born equal in that they all have an equal chance at survival.
In my personal opinion, superiority as you refer to it is determined by intelligence and/or physical strength. Survival of the fittest is not just a theory that applies to which creatures will live and die, but also applies to which creatures will live and prosper. Some are born natural leaders and some are born natural followers. I don't believe that gender determines who is intelligent or strong enough to rule.
