Hi everyone! I am doing a couple surveys and if you could please help it would be appreciated! The question is, if the gov't created a new program to help single parent families with low income pay their bills (auto, auto insurance, electric, gas, daycare etc., rent. etc.) would you as a taxpayer, agree with it or not and why. Also, do you think the gov't could afford it?

No, I wouldn't. As a single parent, I wouldn't take advantage of it either. My child is my responsibility and it's my job to provide for her. Besides that - there are lots of 2-parent families that make less money than single parent families.

No way can the gov't afford it. The only way is to raise the taxpayers taxes and then more people would have to take advantage of it which would mean higher taxes and around and around we go. The Gov't's already spending MY social security which I work for...I'd like to know when they will start recovering that money they spent!

Well, welfare is for people who don't work, and that's not always single parent families.

If the government is putting out any programs to help out, it should be for low income families, not just single parent families. There are many two parent families that make less money than single parent families so why would they get all the help?

I don't know about your governments ability to afford to provide this kind of help as I am from Canada but if they're like any other gov in the world, probably not. Unfortunately, how can we afford NOT to help out needy families? Children growing up in poverty are more likely to join gangs, use drugs and alcohol and get into trouble with the law. Up here, we have a federal child care program that gives ALL parents $100/month to use for child care. You get this money even if you stay at home with your kids (because you are still making a financial sacrifice) or if you don't pay for child care. We also have a child tax benefit that gives parents a monthly amount based on their past year's income. A family who makes a decent amount of money may only receive $40/month where a very low income family may receive $200/month. Other than these the only benefit program available is welfare.

Yes, I think the gov't should create a new program to help single parent families with all this! I would vote for it as a taxpayer. The gov't could easily afford it if it would cut a little (and preferably more) from military spending.

I should preface this with the fact that I am a registered Conservative whose party pretty much shuns these types of programs.

However, I do agree with this concept to a degree. In the US we hand out EVERYTHING to those with no income and do very little for those with little income who are at least trying.

I don't support raising the minimum wage across the board due to the financial impact on the small business owners. But doing something to help the little guy who is TRYING makes more sense to me.

I look at the young people who will never be able to afford their own home and this troubles me. The young people are the future of this country. With all of the outsourcing of jobs abroad I don't see the well-paying job market ever improving, even as the US population grows.

People on Welfare are given everything... medical care, rent, utilities, food, public defenders, etc.... and handouts annoy me much more than giving a helping hand. If you own a home and you're not on Welfare and you fall on hard times where you have to accept assistance, they put a lien on your property. But someone who has been on Welfare for years can one day go off Welfare and buy a home without financial penalty. That's not right.

Can the government afford such a program? I think if they worked together- and cut out the pork from the federal budget- something could be accomplished. Is it likely? No.

I would be hard pressed to agree, there are many programs already in place to help lower income families. As with all programs that are in place there will be many who will abuse the program and as the saying goes a few bad apples spoil the bunch. I do not believe that people who work hard and did well for themselves should have to continue to pay for those who did not. As for why the government can not afford it, just take a look at what a senator gets paid. I am a military wife and full time student, depending on where we live we at times are living just above the poverty line but in most cases do not qualify for welfare, not that we would take it, right now we make 5,000 a month but when we leave and go some where else we could be making less than 1,800 a month. I do feel bad for those that live in poverty but then again as harsh as it may sound I find myself thinking they did it to themselves. Good luck on your essay.

My parents worked their whole lives and made a comfortable living their combined income was about 65.00 an hour, a few years back they both became very ill, I saw first hand how the government choses to hand out its benefits and it is cruel. They had to wait for 2 years for their medicare to kick in, so any hospital bills acquired in that time had to be paid by them, while I tired to help out there is only so much my brother and I could do. They finally decided to get food stamps but because they owned their home and were married, even though there was no income they were denied, they told my parents who have been married for 30 years that if they got divorced they would qualify! My mother said that while she was waiting to talk to some one she over heard two women talking about how they just bought a new 2005 (it was 2005 at the time) Cadillac in her mothers name so she could continue to "milk" the system!

Absolutely not...there are already tons of programs that help out low-income and/or single-parent families. Why should those who choose not to work and reproduce like rabbits get rewarded while those of who manage to do things traditionally and support ourselves and our families get left out in the cold? Having a child is hard and expensive and just because my husband and I have jobs doesn't make it any cheaper for us. I understand that there are tons of good people out there who are in a tough spot due to circumstances beyond their control, but I can personally tell you of twice as many people who are conning the system to get their child paid for and will openly admit it. If the government wants to help with childcare and bills, then it should be an across the board program for ALL parents, not just a certain few.

I would not agree to pay anything to such people! they should take care of their responsibilities, As they should have been more sensible before getting into such mess. I would like to help someone who is really in need but there is some extent to help maybe some times I would not mind, but if its on regular basis people will have another excuse for not being responsible.
And the government would not afford it any way!, look at the no. of single parents!

I don't have kids yet, but I pay taxes and I would agree with such a program, but as others said, not just based on being unmarried, but based on low income. After all, the children did not make any choices as to when/to whom they are born and should have the life they deserve regardless.

Yes, if our gov't can spend oodles of money on ending lives (the war), they can certainly spend some money on improving lives...they just simply don't care to.

People need to do a little research about welfare these days. It's not free money or help paying bills anymore.
The government needs to crack down on collecting child support better.
Wages for everyone, not just minimum wage, need to be increased to fit inflation and cost of living.
So, yes, somewhat, to your question.
