@mhu...

I only drink ONE glass of lemonade in the morning... n that helps me keep going n I have NEVER noticed the thirst when I drink lemonade...

And the saliva thing... since its inside ur mouth already... it wouldN'T make fasting void... even if it accumulates...

Hello and Salaam!

I learned the little 'trick' as to how to avoid being extremely thirsty while fasting. The secret to me seems to be, do not accumulate saliva in mouth and spit. This would make you dehydrate fast and you will feel thirsty and tired as the day progress.

Let the saliva take its own natural course of very slowly and naturally pass down the throat unnoticed, the way you let it pass when you are not fasting. However, be very careful not to swallow the saliva already accumulated in the mouth, as that would make your fasting 'light' or 'Makruh' as we call it here.

I am sorry if I have fallen on the verge of 'cheating' while fasting, but can assure you that fasting would not be that difficult if you take it easy and eat regular meal and drink only one or two glass of liquid more than what you do in usual times.

Btw, no matter how many glasses of water or other drinks you consume before the time expires in early morning for Sehri at 4AM, the liquids would be expelled from your body within 2 to 4 hours and the body would feel thirsty by the time it is 8AM by way of excessive urination. Therefore, please do not over tax your digestive, kidney and other organs by drinking more than 2 to 3 glasses full of water or other liquid in early morning Sehri time. You may compensate the dehydration of the day by taking extra amount of liquids during the Iftar and subsequent dinner.

Hope this would help you keep fasting without feeling much inconvenient.

Ramadanul Mubarak (Kareem)!!

Added in response to Samantha's Additional Data:
The accumulated saliva must not be swallowed; this is what we were taught by the clerics. And I had 'Islamiat' as a subject in High School where we had to learn all these by heart. Btw, I got distinction in that subject along with Physics and Advanced Maths; whatever that means (lol).

At suhoor I usually have milk with cereal and a small amount of water.
Homemade lemonade sounds good but I would stay away from commercial varieties as they are usually full of phosphoric acid which makes you more thirsty, a little 'dirty' trick used by these soft drink companies to get you to drink more.
I try to limit salty foods at iftar and when I do use salt I use a lo-salt.
At supper, before retiring for the night, I have some herbal tea or warm milk.
Thanks for asking :)

LOL! I am in the same boat as you!!! I stayed up too late and overslept! I also have a French club meeting and have to bring drinks for everyone else!!!!

I usually drink a bunch (about two cups) of water before the fast begins (and also drink plenty the evening before) and then I am fine the rest of the day. If I drink any other drink right before the fast starts I usually get more thirsty.

I drink a glass of water in suhur. In my profession as a teacher, I also try not to talk too much, as talking makes you thirsty.

my fasting is personal, not rule bound. Fasting helps , &"i'm not referring to magority of underfed,ill/junk food hookies malnutrition children, women or the globally impoverished sans any resource. Even hunter, gatherers scavengers in vast areas as in Arctic, desert expanses,or `primitives of Micronesia r affluent n comparison .rather than have fast they r into potlatches ,food &Drink.Gift ,totem markings & rest.Nothing is xceptional about hunger pangs, `dying f thirst'. This xperience is common to all, past or present. The belly should not resemble a butcher's w container, abnormally heated by gases on upper part &overheated offal in the lower parts - no the beastly belly.Thirst , hunger pangs r natural 4 returning toward homeo-stasis or 4 equilibrium of body environment/ecology. u can chill out on citrus's ice cold shorbats, coolants, soda/lime 'n salt. In terms f delayed gratification.Fasting rituals civilize the belly but not as a rule.U'd enjoy food/ But i'm aesthetic, yet fast 2 chill out, reflect on commonplaces, etc.
