Is there cheap software out there to run sound effects, music, etc. for a play, skit etc.?

I am running the sound board and want to have effects and music for singing, qued and ready to play by just clicking or hitting an f key etc. Is there any freeware or inexpensive software out there to do this? WindowsMedia Player takes too long to play the sound efect.
