I recieved a gift bag from the mother of a student I just started tutoring. What would be a good return gift or thank you card? I am definatly getting her a card, but would a gift also be appropiate and if so what?

For the card, what should I include? I want to thank her for the gift and that I look forward to working with her and her son, should I add anything else?

All you need to do is respond with a thank-you note. Yes, thank her for the gift and tell her you look forward to working with her son. That should suffice.

Good luck.

She gave you a gift to show appreciation for your taking her child on as a student. Actually, she was not really appropriate. If she wished to do this, she should have waited until the tutoring was complete.

You did not say if you are paid for your tutoring. If you are not paid, then her gift makes a lot of sense.

A return gift in this situation would be inappropriate. A nice, simple thank you card is certainly adequate.

Basically you say (if accurate) that you greatly appreciate her thoughtful gift, but you were surprised as you had not expected to receive any gift. And you can add that you will find the gift very useful... or something to that effect.

Her gift was to show her appreciation for all you do to help her child. It is not incumbent upon you to return the favor, but a thank-you card is always appropriate (and is a great example of good manners for the child to see).

As a tutor, you have a special relationship with the child and a small gift at the holidays for them would be much appreciated by the mother, I am sure.

A card is all that's required.

Think of the huge tangle the gift-giving world might get into if we started giving gifts to thank people for gifts! Would we have to give a gift to thank someone for giving us a gift as a thank you for a gift?

The mind boggles!

She sent you a thank you gift bag for tutoring her child. You do not need to send her a gift merely a thank you card for her gift. Otherwise, it's an endless loop of thank you gifts that never ends.

maybe food? (cake or fruits?)
if you give her things, it fells weird because there's no occasion and she just gave you something. foods can be enjoyed by the mother and the son.
a 'thank for the gift and to look forward to working' is enough. maybe you could add your opinions of her son (you like to teach him, etc...).

Soap, candle or chocolate.
