No. It had to happen as education became better and more universal. The generation in the article was taught to think.

I think polls can be designed to say anything is true and that 105% of responders may agree or disagree with it. My own perspective is that modern Christianity has come too close to and become intertwined with politics, so that it is more of a special interest group than an actual religion. The young will always question the mainstream, and Christianity still holds that place in US society and many other countries. I wonder what this poll would have said had it been taken in 1969 at a Be-In? Youth disaffection is nothing new; I, for one, hope the young (and those "over-40's" like myself) will continue to call societal problems to the attention of those who may have become less able to see things clearly for being in the thick of them for years and years. But I don't think this is particularly new. It is not sad to contemplate; if it is to be taken at face value, it is a call for Christians to do some self-evaluation.

It's very sad, but predictable and not a surprise to me. One of the things I've been saying on Yahoo! Answers is that homophobia is wrong, sinful and immoral. And now I'll add this, homophobia is the thing that will cause the downfall of Christianity in America. Until those who use the Bible to jusify homophobia wake up and get their act together, all of us Christians will be tarnished by their hate.

Unfortunately, as you can see by the answers you're getting, it's easier to blame the media, higher learning, etc. than it is to take responsibility for the harm that many Christians have done to others via hypocrisy, homophobia and harsh judgments.

I don't know if it is sad or not, I think it shows the leaders of the Christian faith that they are not changing with the times to reflect what the future of America is going to accept. I have to admit that a lot of the messages from Christians these days seem to revolve around not accepting others due to their sins as opposed to loving everyone.

Now the question is, does the Christian faiths come together and start to address this or do they ignore it and continue to watch Christianity decline in the eyes of the masses.

No, not sad at in the least. I received that via the Barma Report in my email. He's a fundamentalist pollster and book huckster who conducts all sorts of polls.

If more young adults are skeptical of religion after eight years of a fundamentalist regime in the White Wash House (hardly surprising), America will be a better place for all.

Secular media, huh? I guess you prefer the new Christian Objective reporting on Don Wildmon's American Family Radio, where such neutral terms as "abortuary" are used.

Institutes of higher learning are a joke! Then smite thy computer and throw it out of the window! MIT and Stanford are the prime universities behind this evil internet conspiracy.

That Christians are negatively perceived as "judgmental (87 percent), hypocritical (85 percent), old-fashioned (78 percent), and too involved in politics (75 percent)" and "anti-homosexual" is is not at all surprising, as

1. This is exactly how Hollywood and the media at large typically portrays them,
2. We live in a day where deception reigns, and opposing that which is proven to be morally destructive is portrayed as hateful.
3. Man is sinful by nature, and rebels against God's good laws, which are given for their benefit, especially when they become affluent and given to sensuality, thereby misusing the good things God gave us for our benefit and to His honor.
4. We have largely done what the Bible says not to do, and have become much conformed to this world and society, rather than being able to transform it.
5. Few "evangelical churches, which are the only thing that comes close to a Biblical church, are not really evangelical in deed, but practice "go to church and go home," therefore very very few people have actually known a real Christian who lives out the faith. .

See more alarming statistics here (and repent, pray and preach): http://peacebyjesus.witnesstoday.org/RevealingStatistics.html

Ps. In response to the poster below who insists on using the slur of "homophobia" to refer to Christians who oppose what he promotes, this supposes those who oppose something must be motivated by fear that they are or will be what they oppose (thus mothers against drunk driving must fear they are alcoholics, etc.), or that they must use deceptive psychological tactics to defend something, in this case an obviously perverse behavior that the Bible forbids and is proven to be deleterious to both individual and society: http://peacebyjesus.witnesstoday.org/IsHomosexualitySin.html

I think it shows you haw far this country and religion has gotten away for the bible. We have allowed women preachers, money seeking preachers, false doctrine, cults like the catholic church to be Christianity today. The bible is clear. Separate from the sin of this world and be clean. You need to live by the bible or not. God made his way clear and you can go by it or lose your rewards. Yes it sounds narrow minded but John 14:6 said Jesus was THE way.
Matt 7:13-15 says
13Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat:

14Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.

15Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves

I would say the secular media has done an excellent job in discrediting Christianity - primarily by identifying our primary spokesmen people like Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson. The more bigoted or intolerant a Christian appeared to be, the more airtime he was likely to receive.

I remember when Jane Fonda spoke of her conversion to Christianity after moving to Atlanta. She was astonshed to find all these "cool, hip, funny, intelligent" people who just happened to go to church and were Christians. She had lived in Hollywood her whole life, and had a very distorted view of Christians and Christianity.

And that is what the media has wanted all along.

I suppose for now at least, they have won.

But the final battle is the LORD's.

Institutions of Higher Learning (what a joke!) have systematically attacked Christianity and indoctrinated their minds-full-of-mush students into believing this garbage. Most of the attackers come out of a post-christian cultural situation in which blaming Christiasnity for everything is acceptable and politically correct. In fact, bigotry against Christians (and especially Catholic Christians) is one of the last acceptable prejudices in America. If you insult a homosexual or a Muslim you have commited a hate crime. Insult a Christian and you're a hero at UC Berkeley.
For me, these attacks are better proof than any other proof I know of that Christanity is the true religion: Why else would the world attack it so hard?
