it's extremely hot and surely they must be very thirsty, not like the UK for example.

Yes it is hot but most people try to keep in doors, however, sometimes one can get stuck in traffic or have to work in the sun for some reason fixing something in their house or whatever but it becomes a life style habit since early years of childhood. Indeed everyone looks forward to Ramadhan. Work will start a little later than usual during this month too. Once you are in the first week, it seems natural not to eat for a number of hours each day after that. you don't think about it as one gets occupied doing other things. They have 'suhoor' which is like an early breakfast before dawn when the fast starts. The biggest thing if one has been tired all day is thirst but that's the whole experience of it , to feel the thirst and hunger of those who are hungry and to relate to their plight. You can't relate unless you experience it. It is a healthy and spiritual experience.

Yeah the UK's got it easy. It's pretty hot here in south Texas as well - but not a desert of course! I would guess that these people also have drinks to quench their thirst before and after their fast. I know many cultures do.

They eat before first prayer (at sun up) and again at the fourth prayer (sun down).

So, yeah, I don't think it's all that bad.
