I once had a schizophrenic friend. She took a lot of pills and yes, they had many side-effects. But those side effects were purely physical (like, for example, she used to do spastic movements, or urinate a lot, or feeling dizzy sometimes...) and not psychological. That's what the doctors try to avoid and cure in every case.

Those medicine that the psychiatrists give to patients DO work. And the patients DO feel better.

I quess it is in our minds to tell whether one drug is worse than the other. Whenever we feel the need for a drug like cocaine or LSD or simply a bottle of wine we expect them to make us feel good and take us to a world beyond our wildest dreams...
But when we hear about "prescription drugs" we always think "oh, ok, those are gonna take me back to my reality and the morrons I see everyday, and they are gonna give me a terrible headache or whatever..."

Or, it is all up to the doctors. If the doctor is not a good and specialized one, then it is most likely he or she is going to give us the wrong medicine. But even if we do take the right ones, who's going to assure us we won't have ANY side effects?

We are all different organisms anyway!

cause ppl may be in a locked unit, they r a danger 2 themselves and/or their caregivers. what would u do if someone sits in their feces all day and refuses help? Let him go and smell up the workplace? we have to stop being abused somehow, some alzheimers' (small %) are physically abusive and do kill the ppl they are locked/living with. Alzheimers is fatal, but things happen b4 they die. Live with someone with bipolar...and i'd bet you would b miles away after a manic episode, but they r still manic and go outside and destroy the public. If your arm got chopped off, would you want something for pain so you could bear the pain until some type of permanent effect may or may not occur? I guess the best answer for your question would b 2 ask who ever is the bull in the china shop and c if they r glad or not. Work in a State mental institution or a nursing home where the old ladies sit and scream all day. Imagine....going to work and ppl sit and scream all day. Who wouldn't quickly lose their minds themselves? extacy was a perscription drug first, for couples in counseling. They found out it had fatal side effects and took it off the market. Chemo drugs r very toxic also.

I assume you are of majority age. I can't make a comparison between the two venues of the drus (psychotropic/andtidepression meds gotten from a doctor vs. legal meds abused [sold & bought] gotten in "the streets") as I have not taken any of them.

It is my assumption that certain meds become "street drugs" because the effects are "enjoyed" or "desired".

Choosing the right meds for a patient requires that person's cooperation as well. They need to discuss the undesired side effects with their doctor. They also need to talk to a social worker who can explain more of the "whys" of the meds (as some have done here).

Sometimes, we can't separate the "acceptable" from the "undesired" situations because benefits are intertwined with limitations. I hate waiting in long traffic lines to get to the stadium but love the game once there...

While there are some side effects and risks with psychiatric medications, they are not worse than street drugs.

Pharmaceutical companies will always get paid, how do you think the medication gets into the streets?

They say because the benefits outweigh the side effects... but I think it is just a huge money market in America.
