Raccoons are omnivores, they will eat whatever they can find, even raiding trash cans, so trying to eliminate food sources & making it distasteful can help. They also eat berries, nuts, corn, crayfish, frogs, insects, and eggs of various animals including turtles and birds. Even a bird feeder with seeds might be tempting to a raccoon. So if you get rid of them digging in the ground, you'll also have to make sure that you don't forget to put your bird feeders out of their reach, & eliminate other sources they can rummage through.
It also helps if you don't leave water out that the raccoons can get to. Even a dripping water hose can attract them. Wolf urine & other repellents are said to deter raccoons.

They're active in twilight and evening & prefer relative darkness. Installing multiple, independently triggered motion activated lighting may be helpful in discouraging raccoons.

This site discusses measures some have taken to stop raccoons ruining their lawns:
For some, (black plastic netting-- cost around $7 ) to cover the new 12 x15 ft. sod for a week worked...seems "raccoons don't want to walk on it; they think it's going to shift under them."
Another suggestion that makes a lot of sense is this: "Never water the lawn late in the day or in the evening because that is when worms and grubs become active and all the watering at night makes them crawl up to the surface encouraging raccoons, possums, skunks, and moles to seek out easy target food. Also, watering frequently and lightly encourages more pests in the surface of the soil which in turn encourages the animals. The key: water less often and for longer periods of time, and, only do it in the mornings."

Good luck! Hope this helps.

they are hard to get rid of. Something is attracting them to your property. Try making a spray of 1 small bottle of hotsauce, 1gal. water, 1teaspoon dish soap. Spray the area. Good Luck
