would it be cheaper to just buy a new tower?

Upgrade RAM if you will use Vista. Otherwise, 1Gb is fine for XP.

E4400 is fast and consumes less power (cooler running).
In benchmarks below, even the slower E4300 beats the 3.2ghz Pentium Ds (dual cores).

E4400, like the rest of the Core2 Duo family, is a good overclocker. 3.0Ghz overclock would just be like a walk in the park.

Depends what you use your pc for. 1 gig is a decent amount of ram. I wouldn't buy a dual core just yet. The quad core is getting cheaper everyday.

if your running a single core, i would go for the C2D first. A dual core running at 1.8 performs just as good or better than a single core running at 2.6. if your are running XP, then 1 gig. is the bare minimum. 2 gigs is much better, but upgrade your cpu first.
