I refuse to purchase items from stores that have signs that advertise X-Mas also...

Happy Holidays is way more acceptable and yes it is a pet peeve of mine. I prefer not to shop at all but will walk right back out of the store if they advertise X-Mas... it is taking the Christ out of Christmas as far as I am concerned!

Yes, it used to really bother me when I saw it being used more often than Christmas. But, I did some searching and found out that its origin is thoroughly rooted in the heritage of the Church. It is simply another way to say Christmas, drawing on a long history of symbolic abbreviations used in the church. Below is a site that explains it. But I still prefer to say Christmas.

I hate it as well....Christmas has the word Christ in it for a reason. I remember being a little girl and my mom would always gripe about it being spelled like that, I didnt understand until I got a bit older. But you are very right, they are ruining the very meaning of Christmas by doing that! If they feel they need to leave religion out of it then like you said they should just put "happy holidays" or something like that....

Of course I also hate the fact that they start decorating for Christmas before Thanksgiving has even come and gone....heck around here the Christmas stuff goes up right before Holloween....thats also very annoying...lets get thru one holiday at a time folks!!

X is the first letter of Christ in Greek, the language of first written version of the New Testament . It is a perfectly legitimate abbreviation which does not take the "Christ out of Christmas".

It is popular to many to leave Christ out of Christmas and I too will not support stores bearing X-Mas.

Sometimes I do. It's just disappointing how people set aside the essence the day Christ was born. Why substitute it with an "X" when we know of him enough. "X" for me is like saying he's unknown. However, I think it is just intended for being creative or putting some style that's why they tend to make it short instead.

Copied from Wikipedia: "Xmas" is a common abbreviation of the word "Christmas". It is sometimes pronounced /ˈɛksməs/, but it, and variants such as "Xtemass", originated as handwriting abbreviations for the typical pronunciation, /ˈkrɪsməs/. The "-mas" part is from the Latin-derived Old English word for "mass",[1] while the "X" comes from the Greek letter Chi, which is the first letter of the Greek word Χριστός, translated as "Christ".

Yes, it drives me nuts, but I won't go so far as to not purchase an item because of it! You're not winning in that situation. Can't control others ya know?!

What really gets me is when people abbreviate San Francisco into Frisco!!!! That I can't f'in stand!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not being particularly religious, I still cringe when I see xmass
rather than christmas... be it on advertising, cards, or letters
and instil the christ into christmas with my kids...odd!

Not really. Sometimes i use "xmas" when texting messages. It gets the message across eitherway. However, in formal compositions, like an official report, or a collegiate paper, they do have to be spelled correctly.

Come on we live in the year 2007 now. Christmas has been dead for years now. Be happy, X-Mas is coming soon!
