Depending on if you want a wired or wireless network is what will determine what equipment you need to purchase.

If you want a wired LAN then you need to have a ethernet port on the two computers, a router and two ethernet cables to connect from the router to each computer.

Ill suggest the following router:

If you want a wireless network then you will need two wireless network adapters and a wireless router.

Ill suggest the following items:

If in the future you purchase DSL or cable internet you can connect the Internet modem to the router and share the internet between the two computers also.

The best for you is to get a wireless router (any) and connect the latop with either wifi or cable and the desktop with a cable.

All it requires from you is to read the simple user guide that comes with the router, no much other knowledge required and everything will be connected in matter of minutes and ready for another device if needed.

The file sharing itself can be set up using inbuilt windows tools, Control Panel > Network Connections > Set up a home or small office network in win XP and something similar in Vista ;)

But you didn't ask how to do the sharing, so I won't answer that. And you surely know how to find out your ip addresses needed for games so I won't answer that either :)

Easiest way would be a crossover cable between the two.

You could also get a switch or a hub and connect both machines to that. But if you were going that route you might as well get a router in case you decide to get internet access in the future.

You can purchase a crossover cable from bestbuy or a similar store. :)

It has to be a crossover cable though. A typical Ethernet cable will NOT work
