To be truthful, you could probably exist very well, without ever knowing the news, which comes through the news media.
However, to refute my own statement, I live in a hurricane prone area. Without the news media, I would have no way of knowing about an approaching hurricane, to make the proper arrangements.

The news media keeps us advised as to what is happening in the world around us, and helps us to understand why certain things are happening.
