well, i've heard arguments for BOTh sides - and i think everyone has a point. for me, he's UNDER rated, though. i'm a songwriter.....blah blah blah.
what he did was awesome. you guys have to remember that we were coming out of the 80s.....a really, really lame musical period with Overproduction and OVER playing being the publically-decided popular musical characteristics. hair bands, axl rose's daisy dukes, duran duran's fancy computers, etc. were all the rage. kurt took it back to a guitar played in the most simple way. he broke it down to just a simple guitar with a good melody.....perfect, unpretentious song craft.
he didn't have the technical ability to play like poison's [super-lame] nikki sixx (hehehe..or whatever the hell the clown with the makeup and the perm was called), but he was 100x the musician. it kind of pointed out that musicality isn't about technical prowess.....a realization that a musician has to 'mature' into. he force-fed that down the american rock listeners' throats...and almost single-handedly brought forth a WHOLE new movement in pop rock. so many doors were opened....and closed to the theatrical hair-band clowns.

Hell I think Kurt Cobain and Nirvana is overrated. They're really not the best band ever, and I believe the other grunge bands are better. Nirvana has some good songs, but most songs are okay to be honest.
And Kurt Cobain isn't that good of a guitarist. He's average at best, good enough to satisfy a band's guitar needs.

No chance of that. He's far closer to being overrated if anything although I will acknowledge his talent. But hardly a day goes by where we aren't hearing about the greatness of Kurt. So unless you are living under a rock, you would be hard-pressed to make a case for him being underrated.
Dani G - I think that's the most I've seen you say at one time. :)

hmmm.......that's a tough one for me........
I believe they are underrated to many of the "Radio Fans," those who have only heard their 'commercial' material - Smells Like Teen Spirit, Heart-Shaped Box, All Apologies, Come As You Are, Lithium, In Bloom........... Those people who resign themselves to just listening what radio plays are denying themselves the chance to discover great tracks on their albums (Floyd The Barber, Something In The Way, Scentless Apperentice, Milk It, etc...)
Then there are those who proclaim them to be the best band ever........yeah, to them they might be, but not to the whole world. Cobain and company were amazing at what they did. As a lyricist, Kurt put into worlds all the turmoil and conflict going on inside of him......and to many of the youth at the time (myself included) its resonated and still resonates to the later generations. Nirvana was the first to hit it huge commercially and opened the market for grunge to be deemed 'acceptible' by the masses.
To me, Nirvana is an amazing band.....their 'mainstream' stuff was good, and there can be no denying that they had talent, or else we wouldn't still be talking about them. Some sell them short......maybe the music is just not for them.......and others take it to the point of obsession.........to each his/her own.
***LnR - What can I say? I'm a woman of few words.......simple & straight to the point. ***

I find it funny that so many of his idols outlasted him, including Buzz Osborne, Dale Crover, Steve Albini, Greg Sage, Kim Gordon, and Frank Black, all of whom have released material in the last two years save Sage. Kurt would be the first to tell you that their work deserves more attention than it gets.
EDIT: To the person above who for some inexplicable reason believes that you have to be part of a commercially successful musical group in order to criticize one, please stop saying dumb things, and remember that saying positive things about a band is still criticism.
EDIT2: To the person below who manages to make the exact same mistake, please look into the above-mentioned influences of Kurt's, then perhaps you'll realize what a pale imitation so much of his work was.

underrated hell no !!! in fact nirvana is one of the most overrated bands ever. Kurt was pretty awesome at what he did and his work is still appreciated for that. Kurt is a legend and will always be. he might not have been the best but his fans still believe that he was the best ever made. Kurt is one of the most talked about artists in the world. we all love him..

No. He was kind of a mediocre talent. And just one of those nasty kind of people who think they are so great because they have a record contract. Before they were famous, when Nirvanna played in my city, they set fire to the dressing room of the club they were booked at. That is uncalled for.Never could understand the fuss made over him. He is definitely, in my opinion, over rated

I don't think he was underrated or overrated.
He was important. He changed the course of modern rock music and made alternative a household name, atleast until it became saturated. He probably didn't mean to do that, but it is what it is.

I think he is overrated because all these little teens and stuff are only liking him cause they think thats the cool thing to do. I mean yes he was one of the top artists you can say.. but when it becomes a thing to like someone cause everyone else does.. that makes it not cool
