A child called "it"- Dave Prezel.
It was about how a child struggled to fight for survival with an abusive mother and a passive father.
Go read it ! :) Really nice.
I was quite touched after reading it, and it was an eye opener.
My mum cried, haha.

Charlotte Bronte's "Jane Eyre". By 11 it helped me conceive of deep love as beginning with what I would come to understand is called 'intellectual kinship'.

'Revolution Betrayed' by Leon Trotsky. I don't think anyone can understand any aspect of 20th and 21st century life without an appreciation of the world historical signifcance of the Russian Revolution and the tragic consequences of its betrayal in the 1930s. (For those who don't know, the regime that collapsed in 1991 bore no relation to the regime established by the Bolsheviks in 1917.)
