Depends on what you mean by better.

Planning is the process of reducing risk and maximizing return in the long term.

While doing things as they come is a process of maximizing return in a given situation.

The more you know about what will happen in the future, the more your plan can maximize your return for each situation you encounter.

The degree to which each produces the best solution depends on the level of predictability you are dealing with.

You might say, if taking things as they come maximizes the return then planning is not going to be a good idea. However planning increase efficiency. If you know what you need before hand you can be prepared beforehand.

You have to find a good combination of both planning and improvising at the last minute. Some things require planning for weeks and some things come on the spur of the moment. It is up to you to be ready for whatever comes your way.

You should always plan to do things as they come.

Making plans is good, but you will at times find doing what comes along more important, or more fun. Be ready for whatever comes along. Good planning leaves more time available. Well, if you actually complete some tasks.

To me, planning is essential for success for sooo many reasons. However, you must always be flexible. This is why alternate plans exist, also. You must leave room because things change all of the time but if you did not plan anything, you are at a loss for what you COULD do if you DO plan. I hope to be of much help :->

You plan the best you can and deal with unexpected things that fall outside the plans as best you can.

Prepare for the worst, hope for the best.

I think generally you should make short term plans and don't get dissapointed if things won't alwayts come the way you want. Everything happens for a reason!
