Certainly. Rap music has become an element of life, learning, education, and goal setting for a number of youths, be they caucasian or african-american.
People who grew up in a certain socio-economic lifestyle, look upon rap stars as those who have made it out of the "ghetto" if I must. People who don't necessarily share the same socio-economic status, but who can relate to that of the musicians feel the same way. People who live(d) the way of the streets associate with this music very closely. Like any activity which can lead to the notoriety or fame of an individual, it can give hope to those who consider the artist a role model. Is it always a good thing? No, when rap stars talk about killing and disrespecting authority figures, then it is no longer a positive influence. But that is the case with any genre of music. Country musicians and rock and rollers alike have glorified drinking and drugs, and that certainly doesn't benefit anyone either.
For my own part, I don't much care for rap music as a general rule, but it manly stems from the fact that most of it is way too full of base for me. I don't generally care for music wherein the lyrics are profane either, no matter what style it is.
Every art form benefits society in that it gives us a freedom to express ourselves. Like the hippies said to their parents when they claimed that rock and roll was just "noise"; if you don't like it, don't listen. That's the beauty of art, somehow, somewhere, it touches people in a way that some can understand and others can't.

Can you tell me how Country music has benefited society? What about Heavy Metal?

Let me guess, you're trolling for racist answers? You need to get a life. Rap music is just another form of music, a way for an artist to express his talents, much like country and metal.

I have friends who freestyle rap and I don't like the genre of rap music but it is fascinating to watch them do that on the spot! They rap positive, uplifting lyrics too because they understand the influence they have on their listeners. I think anyone with an open mind could benefit from them and others like them. They don't spend their money on needless things either so for those who admire them, it is not an expensive taste.

All music benefits society by allowing the element of society that produces it to be creatively expressive.

In the other hand "POP" has...there r lots of contributors like Michael Jackson, Shakira, Bono, Cat Stevens, Phil Collins, Ricky Martin,. etc, etc. Just 2 name a few.

It helped get the message out about the ghetto in the beginning. Now it's just commercialized crap.
