In the movie Gandhi, why does Gandhi ask the people to burn their British made clothes?

I don't get why... any help would be appreciated.

Because they were a sign of the British imperialism, and conversely the Indians' slavery to that imperialism. Therefore, the burning of the clothes symbolized a conscious decision to throw off the most visible sign of that slavery and to re-embrace their true selves as Indians, rather than British pawns.

Before 1947 India was a British colony. Indian nationalistic leaders thought that British rulers were exporting/stealing Indian raw material from India for cheap and importing the British made finished products into India. They were thus creating a cheap market for the British goods and harming Indian people at the same time. This thought led to a call to boycott all British goods including British clothes. Gandhi thought that self sufficiency was the way to go.

British Made Clothes

In the 19th centure India was the manufacturing centre of the world. Then the british dismantled the industry there and moved it back to Merry old England to boost their own economy.

The British banned certain things in India, such as people making salt and I think they also banned the making of clothes. So India was kept poor because they were buying their cotton from the UK.

Ghandi basically encouraged people to wear home spun cloth so as to fight back against the british control.

It would be like not buying Chinese made goods (iPod, Matel toys etc) to protest against chinese manufacturing and encourage companies to make things in the US.
