Are you going to down-grade them for not showing up for class? If so, that should be in the syllabus. When you catch up with them, you might remind them.
But, if you are only interested in the final result -- ie: final test grades -- then maybe you can let it slide. But that can be dangerous; if they don't go to class, and don't learn the material, they do badly on the test, and then your overall score gets dragged down. Do you give mid-term or other regularly scheduled tests? I'd only "remind" the students who are doing very poorly on the not-final tests.
Talk to them face to face, and see if they are willing to talk about their reasons. If not, mention their options -- like taking an incomplete, or dropping the course.
Really, it shouldn't be your job to be their Mother, and make sure they get to school on time. You can lead a horse to water, but you cannot make them drink. So, let the horse find its own water! They know where to find the class.

The best thing to do. Find out why. How to find out. Act as if they're someone special in the class. Treat them good. Because you just might really have a very big thank you from this person at the end of the year. It could be anything! Making a Human feeling wanted is the best feeling in the world. Just cuz this person, every now and then skips class. Doesn't mean there bad. Just don't allow yourself to be used. Now days it could be anything. I would try to make it to where the child feels safe and special.

Institute an attendance policy as a prerequisite to a passing grade in the class...say 95 % attendance in order to obtain the attendance credit. Then send a sign in sheet around for each class..

you could make attendance part of their grade if it's a graded class -- like 10% of the grade is based upon attendance and every time they are absent it affects the overall grade. if it's a k-12 school, absences should be reported to administration/parents. if it's a college or other non-mandatory class, make attendance a mandatory part of participation (like if they miss class without a good reason they are no longer welcome) if having them absent is a problem for you...

im absent from school because i have insomnia, its hard for me to get enough energy to go to school let alone staying awake when i get there. making the grade mainly based on attendence is what makes me fall behind in my classes so that dosent work for me but i suppose for the people who skip to do stupid things that would work.

I'm assuming you're a professor b/c this is a higher education forum, and if that's the case, who cares if they come to class or not. It's their loss, and you still get paid.
I don't think forcing students to come to class is they answer, they'll hate you and you'll get bad reviews, trust me, my class of 300 did that to one professor. It's up to you to be interesting, if you suck, well that's your fault and if they are just lazy then it's theirs.

Most of my biology professors pass around a sign up sheet each period and whoevers name does not appear they get points off. or if you assign a small one question quiz each period, they will make sure to show up.
